Kurly Kale Theatre Group has provided free weekly drama for well-being, for adults with learning disabilities, weekly, over Zoom. Due to a lack of funding the director/facilitators – Alexander Tol & Henry Leroy-Salta took no fee for the service they provided in this financial year. Kurly Kale Theatre Group exists with or without funding. When funding is granted the facilitators take a daily fee and work with service users in person. When there is no funding (as was the case this year), Kurly Kale Theatre Group transitions to an online service providing weekly drama for well-being on zoom. Kurly Kale Theatre Group uses theatre workshops as a starting foundation for users (adults with learning disabilities) to build confidence, and engage socially and creatively. KKTG encourages users to experiment with roles, not only in character work, but also in group dynamics. Users explore their sense of self, and also grow through their compassion for each other. We are a user-led grassroots organisation: our users are the creative driving force, and, with us, they have true agency. Our core service is our weekly in-person Drama for Wellbeing and Drama for Professional Development sessions for adults (18+) with learning disabilities, in London. In short, Kurly Kale Theatre Group provides a space where adults with learning disabilities in the community can express themselves, share concerns, build their social skills, improve their sense of agency, and grow their independence.

Termly meetings have been held with the lead service providers and Ella Dale (Producer) to find funding opportunities. Company decided after meeting to make another Arts Council Funding application. A meeting was held with Helen Tennyson (Accounts Advisor) about the accounting for Kurly Kale Theatre Group. Company decided to hand over accounting administration to Helen Tennyson in order to maintain the highest possible standards of accounting. 2 meetings were held with Chloe Orrock (Volunteer) about building a funding pack. The company designed a funding pack with the oversight of Chloe Orrock and distributed it over social media, to families of the service users, and to friends. Alex & Henry have held meetings to ensure the continuation of services despite low funding this Financial Year. There are regular check-ins with users and carers to ensure the service is continuing to make a tangible difference. Here is some of the recent anonymised feedback. We use all feedback to keep our services relevant and useful. The sessions are safe, kind and respectful of where everyone is at, but also imaginative and such fun. My son’s confidence and communication with others has grown hugely, and not least, the group is an incredibly meaningful point of connection for him to engage with his friends and meet new ones. You can’t put a price on that. He’s proud to be a part of it. - G (parent of group member) I enjoyed every time I attend Kurly Kale Group. Each of member shares a wonderful imaginations and the organisers are professionally creates everyone’s idea in one story. Every one respects each other. Grateful to have this group to find similar people. There are no many other places like this group that they understand each of their different difficulties. – L (group member) I love it, full of energy and I love the buzz, they encourage and support everyone, I love the improvisation which leads to the acting scenes which is excellent, I feel likeI’m constantly on cloud-9 while I’m there. It is very welcoming, everyone gets on and is very friendly, the energy and vibe is electric. I would certainly be very excited to return to Kurly Kale as soon as possible in person as I have missed it very much, it supports my autism and isolation. - P (group member) PJ really loves the group sessions. I have been impressed with the confidence, positivity and overall buoyant mood of PJ and everyone involved. PJ enjoys the social aspect of Kurly Kale, and finds a lot of value in expressing himself through acting and exploring this side of his creativity in a safe and welcoming space. Coming to the sessions really provides him with an outlet that he does not get in any other setting. I feel that coming to Kurly Kale has a positive effect on PJ’s mental health and wellbeing, and has really improved his ability to express his emotions and talk about how he is feeling. - J (brother of group member)
