Additional information
SettleX.org has focused on improving economic inclusion for refugees and other displaced people by creating practical routes into skills development, employment, self-reliance, and long-term career progression. Its work has evolved in response to community needs and available delivery capacity. 2022–2023: Beauty services and trade-training pilot During the 2022–2023 financial year, SettleX.org operated a beauty salon activity while piloting vocational trade-training opportunities through partner organisations. The salon created a practical, customer-facing environment in which participants could gain exposure to workplace expectations, service delivery, and income-generating skills. The partner-led training pilot tested demand for accessible vocational learning and helped identify which pathways could lead to real employment or self-employment. This benefited the community by offering refugees practical skills, confidence, professional experience, and a clearer route toward financial independence. 2023–2025: Employment referrals and direct job creation From 2023 to 2025, the focus shifted toward direct employment support. Through personal networks, SettleX.org identified job opportunities, referred refugees to suitable roles, and supported them through the process of entering work. Where possible, refugees were also employed within the founder’s other businesses. This created immediate paid work opportunities while allowing individuals to build local work experience, develop references, improve their professional networks, and strengthen their financial stability. The impact during this period was highly personal and relationship-driven: instead of offering only advice, SettleX.org actively connected people with employers and created tangible employment opportunities. This helped reduce barriers often faced by refugees, including limited networks, difficulty accessing formal opportunities, and lack of locally recognised work experience. 2025–2026: Mentoring and transition to an online academy During 2025–2026, SettleX.org began restructuring its activities toward a more scalable online academy model. The work has centred on personal mentoring, career guidance, confidence-building, and helping individuals identify viable training and employment pathways. The move toward an online academy is intended to expand access beyond one-to-one referrals or a single physical workplace. By developing structured digital learning and mentoring resources, SettleX.org aims to help more refugees access career-relevant education, employability support, and practical guidance regardless of location. Overall benefit to the community Across the period, SettleX.org has supported the community through three complementary forms of impact: Skills and employability: Practical beauty-sector experience and vocational training pilots helped participants build useful workplace skills. Access to work: Personal referrals and direct hiring connected refugees to real employment opportunities and income. Confidence and inclusion: Mentoring and workplace exposure supported individuals to navigate employment systems, build professional confidence, and feel more included in their host communities. Scalable future support: The transition to an online academy is designed to make skills development and mentoring accessible to a wider number of beneficiaries. This model has progressed from hands-on, local support to a broader education-led approach, while retaining its central purpose: helping refugees move from dependency toward dignity, income, professional capability, and sustainable participation in the economy.
