Summary 2025 saw us move into The Gardeners House and into our first official home. The office, in an annex to the main Gardeners House building in Morrab Gardens, now gives us a hub to run our projects from and a base for our growing team of volunteers and freelancers. We also made the transition from relying solely on project related funding, to attracting core costs support and income generation through community fundraising. We increased funding for the organisation by a third, which has been essential in ensuring the long-term viability of our work in the community. Funding has enabled us to bring more people in to work on projects and initiatives, creating more sustainability for the organisation itself and also enabling more skills, creativity and talent to be applied to our community engagement work. The focus has been on community workshops and events, community collaboration and linking the community better to decision making. To look at the challenges we face locally, and how we can all work together to create a resilient and thriving town for the future which puts people, place and planet first. This summary report is not an exhaustive list of work undertaken but gives an overview of the year. Workshops and Events We held a series of workshops and events across the year based on our ten themes of Energy, Food, Transport, Biodiversity, Lifestyle, Education, Business, Tourism, Waste and Decision Making. These were delivered across the town and surrounding area, with a specific remit to reach people in Penzance Parish. Sustainable PZ sees it as vital everyone feels a part of creating the kind of future we want to see for our children and grandchildren, and beyond. So Sustainable PZ has an extra focus on outreach to parts of the community who are excluded, disenfranchised or discriminated against for whatever reason that may be. Workshops and events examples include: Beach and Street Cleans – including storm responses and Citizen Science gathering, to support national campaigns and policy change Power to Change workshops – aimed at building confidence and self-esteem in women and girls accessing support and services through organisations such as West Cornwall Womens Aid Clothing Repair Workshops – teaching skills and encouraging creative ways of repurposing clothing and materials to save money and waste Accessible Film Nights with panel discussions or workshops off the back –films focus on our themes and relate to the local community and culture, inspiring conversation on how we can do things differently and also linking to existing work and opportunities. Skate workshops - working with a group of young skaters on protest in skate culture and then creating their own campaign art on decks, in response to climate crisis and its impact on the places that matter to them. Tackling climate anxiety through positive ideas and visualisation of the future. Rewild PZ – creative visioning workshops to reimagine key sites in the area for the future, if they were returned to nature and brought back to community use and benefit. Some of this work has been used to form part of community consultation over potential development sites. You can see more on our social media pages. Funding Reports are also available which go into more specific detail. Projects Projects to highlight in 2025 include: Penzance Greenways – we expanded the project with a walking map of Newlyn, with associated guided walks and map-making workshops. Our online map and resources were expanded, providing more options and access to the maps for the General Public. We also collaborated with specific community groups across the town to encourage more active travel, instigate less car use, and improve connection to nature and health and wellbeing. We also secured a final round of extension funding to create a Gulval map, run more walks and workshops and also create an income generation model for the project, so it could continue to benefit the community under its own steam from July 2026. Plastic Free Penzance – our flagship project continued to work to reduce single use plastic locally at source, working with businesses, the local council, schools and local organisations as well as holding clean ups, workshops and awareness events for the whole community. PackSwap PZ and Refill PZ come under our Plastic Free PZ work and we got The Penzance Cup scheme off the ground with a set of refill cups that can be lent out to venues and events to avoid using single use plastic cups. The highlights of 2025 were creating a 500 strong human chain along the promenade as part of the nationwide SAS People vs Plastic Day of Protest, and having our voice heard directly at the Global Plastics Treaty in Geneva through Surfers Against Sewage's 'Community Call to Action'. Both events connecting our local community voice to national and global decision making. Local Decision Making We continued to work to connect more people locally to decision making, on a local and also national scale. Decisions of importance and related to our work in 2025 included: Neighbourhood Plan Referendum Development projects at the key locations of Wherrytown and Coinagehall Street Local Elections - we took a youth focus to encourage more young people to register to vote and take part in local elections. We also held hustings with Cornwall Council candidates for the county elections. You can see more on our social media pages. Funding Reports are also available which go into more specific detail. SPZ Community Hub We continued to build on previous stakeholder engagement and workshops, by achieving funding support for the SPZ Community Hub. This means we now have a freelancer who can spend some of their hours supporting and building collaboration through the hub. We also now have our own venue to hold meetings and host the hub. We are now working with hub members to better support and signpost to all of their work. This is in order to create a more cohesive community movement on people, place and planet and from which collaborative projects and work can grow. Examples of organisations we worked with across the year, signposted to, supported or raised awareness of include: West Cornwall Women's Aid Penzance Food Festival PZ Community Fire Station Surfers Against Sewage Mounts Bay Marine Group Beryl Bikes Trelya events and support Whole Again Communities, events and workshops Growing Links events, support, services and workshops Transition Penwith Network National Energy Action Town deal and future high streets project updates and consultations Paul Nature Group Butterfly Trust Refill PZ Tree planting days Earth Hour C.R.A.P Penwith PZ and Newlyn Youth Jubilee Pool Cornwall Community Foundation St Just Earth Day SPZ Schools Hub and Youth Engagement Freelance support meant we could expand our suite of resources and support through the Schools Hub. Our workshop offer expanded and we ran our first after school clubs as well as engaged young people in decision making and getting their views on how they saw areas of their town changing for the better in the future. Young people led our Local Election content and we worked with young people to create two key exhibitions to raise awareness on climate crisis and positive solutions. We also brought a half day workshop to the town on storytelling and film through our partnership with the Blue Juice Festival, which focused on inspiring young people in alternative careers and jobs with tangible pathways forwards. SPZ Business Hub Funding for the business hub wrapped up in 2025 and we focused on signposting to the resources and free consultancy for members. We continued to share information and case studies on businesses who choose to do business with less impact. We also supported business networking events and workshops. Ongoing localised support of SAS Plastic Free Champions, signed up through Plastic Free PZ, now falls under the SPZ Business Hub. Partnerships We work with a number of organisations and events to support them to reduce impact, raise awareness and collaborate on projects and events. Partnerships in 2025 included: Golowan The Gardeners House 16 Days of Activism Penlee House and Gallery: The Shape of Things Exhibition, workshops and climate cafe Blue Juice Festival Penzance Food Festival Volunteer management and training Our volunteers are our power, and in 2025 we continued regular volunteer liaison, meetings and widened opportunities. We trained up more walk leaders, opened up a Duke of Edinburgh placement, and added more ad hoc members to our volunteer WhatsApp group. These more ad hoc members tend to join in with event support as an entry point, with some then progressing into more regular volunteering. Volunteers have direct input into our work and fundraising; they are consulted, propose ideas and are increasingly gaining confidence to lead on projects and events.
Directors - are consulted regularly via email and other comms channels and at our bi-monthly Directors meetings. Directors oversee and shape the organisation, and feedback is always translated into actions to take forwards. Volunteers - are consulted regularly via whatsapp and at our bi-monthly meetings. See above section on Volunteer Training & Management Community Hub – we have inclusive meeting methods and decision-making processes, with consultation built into each meeting and project. We moved into our physical Hub at the Gardeners House this year, with more work now happening to bring members together to consult, shape and deliver local projects. Wider Community- through polls, surveys, consultation and feedback. We shape and develop our projects based on the results of these activities. We roll out our own consultation and feedback mechanisms as well as share those from other organisations in the town, including consultations on key developments, projects and policy. Businesses – business consultation is at the heart of our work with them, to listen, learn what info and support they need and build support and initiatives that work for them We roll our surveys, newsletters and events and carry out workshops with local businesses. The hub was created from business consultation and any developments in it or to our work with businesses is consulted on, so they can co-create it with us. Community Decision Makers - we continued to be part of Penzance Council Climate Emergency Group and had regular contact with Cornwall Councillors, Penzance Town Councillors, Penzance BID, Business Groups and the Tourism Association. This is to keep them aware of what we are doing as well as to collaborate on projects and get initiatives off the ground and hold decision makers to account.
