During the year, Local Organic Growers CIC continued its allotment community growing project, bringing allotment plots that had previously been disused and in poor condition back into productive use. The CIC grew a diverse range of organic fruit and vegetables with the involvement of approximately 10 to 15 volunteers. Surplus produce was provided to St James's Food Bank, benefiting local people and families on low incomes. Produce was also used to support other community and charitable groups, including the Sea Lion Disability Swimming Group, for whom food was prepared using produce grown by the CIC for its swimming gala, AGM and Christmas event. Volunteers shared in produce grown by the project, and young people undertaking their Duke of Edinburgh's Award were also involved, providing opportunities to learn practical growing skills, contribute to the community and spend time outdoors. The project also brought environmental benefits by improving previously neglected land and encouraging biodiversity, including insects, butterflies, bees and birds. Participants benefited from learning about organic food production, access to fresh organic produce, outdoor physical activity, social participation and the associated health and wellbeing benefits.
The CIC consulted informally and regularly with volunteers involved in the allotment project. Volunteers discussed the jobs they were carrying out on the plots and the types of produce they particularly enjoyed. The CIC also took account of allergies and dietary requirements when planning crops, helping to ensure that a diverse range of produce was grown so that as many participants as possible could benefit. The CIC also consulted with the Sea Lion Disability Swimming Group about menu choices for its events. Menu planning took account of the group's needs and the produce that was in season and available from the allotment at the time. This consultation informed the meals prepared for the group's swimming gala, AGM and Christmas event. These conversations and the day-to-day involvement of volunteers helped inform crop choices, practical work on the plots and how the produce was shared and used within the community.
