During the reporting period, approximately £26,000 was directed towards identifiable community support, consisting of: more than £2,800 provided to two external organisations to enable them to hold conferences and meetings, with a combined reported attendance of 127 people; approximately £6,700 spent on nine complete days of free legal drop-in clinics, delivered through a mixture of full-day and half-day sessions; and approximately £16,500 awarded through 158 individual grants. The legal clinics provided access to professional support in criminal law, family law and welfare benefits. A total of 81 people directly benefited from those sessions. The individual grants provided practical assistance including court clothing for defendants, school and physical education uniforms for children, national and international travel to maintain contact with loved ones in custody, overnight accommodation where required for those contact visits, and public transport costs for court hearings, appointments with solicitors, child contact and medical appointments. Assistance was also provided towards essential vehicle repairs where maintaining a roadworthy vehicle enabled a beneficiary to continue working and supporting their family. The organisation additionally funded food and supplies for a street kitchen supporting vulnerable individuals who are often involved with the criminal justice system. The support provided was intended to remove immediate practical barriers, preserve family relationships, support employment and reduce the impact of criminal justice involvement upon families effected.
Stakeholders included beneficiaries, family members, volunteers, legal professionals, community organisations, event organisers and service providers. Consultation took place through direct engagement with beneficiaries, feedback from those attending legal clinics, discussions with community and professional partners and contact with organisations receiving financial support. This engagement informed the types of grants made available, the legal clinics provided and the organisation’s decisions about where its resources could achieve the greatest practical benefit.
