Company activities and impact

Chinatown Collective is a volunteer-led community interest company (CIC) dedicated to: Heritage-making activities connected to London’s Chinatown; Sustaining and supporting a vibrant volunteer group focused on heritage-making and community building; and sing heritage-focused activities to further social justice. We recognise that our country and many of the systems within it do not benefit all people equally. Our work uses heritage making, community building and co-design practices to explore inequalities, apply and develop antiracism practices, de-colonise heritage-making practices and histories, and build allyship with people whose voices and lived experiences are often marginalised. We focus on community building principles and co-design practices in our work. We believe in the power of diversity and inclusion to enrich our work. Chinatown Collective’s work is led and coordinated by a group of committed volunteers. During this reporting period, the organisation has: Welcomed 162 people to Chinatown through our Chinatown Stories walking tour programme Taken part in Lunar New Year celebrations by hosting walking tours for schools and businesses; holding a stall during the Chinatown parade; holding heritage making workshop for Westminster City Council Marked East and Southeast Asian heritage month with special edition walking tours Taken part in the School for Social Entrepreneurs Trading for Good programme Held a stall at the Soho Fete, the annual celebration of Soho community Held the secretariat for the Chinatown Stakeholders Group community meeting Hosting and facilitating of a meeting in July 2025 with at least 5 different stakeholders including Westminster City Council on breaking barriers to working together and optimisation with a report on actionable points

Consultation with stakeholders

The organisation’s stakeholders include working with Chinatown’s different communities: the workforce, business owners, tourists, regular and occasional visitors, volunteers, social and civic services and the many regular contributors and collaborators in the area. During this reporting period Chinatown Collective has held: A launch event: Hosted a volunteer and wider stakeholder launch event in November 2024 presenting our intentions as an organisation and inviting comment and participation on our ongoing work. These responses allowed the organisation to develop a wider volunteer group History Champion study session: Held a study session for History Champion volunteers who led Chinatown Stories walking tours. This allowed for differing perspectives on heritage making, specialist topics of interest, and historical interpretation to be explored and shared. A programme to develop volunteering structures. This stakeholder engagement led to the formation of Chinatown Collective strategy group gathering a wider group of volunteers to lead and shape the organisation’s priority areas. Regular meetings with Westminster City Council focused on collaboration and partnership within community groups, taking part in a series of activities with other groups Hosting and facilitating meeting of different stakeholders in July 2025 on breaking barriers down between different organisations including Westminster City Council and optimising working together Working with other charities and community groups to create the Chinese Heritage Alliance (CHA) to collaborate on cultural events and activities.
