JOLLY GOOD EXPERIENCES CIC exists to advance education, creativity, wellbeing and social inclusion through photography. During the reporting period the company delivered photography workshops, public talks, exhibitions and educational activities designed to increase access to photography education and provide opportunities for creative engagement, lifelong learning and social participation. The company's activities align with its stated community purpose of promoting education, wellbeing and inclusion through photography. The company's principal activities included the organisation and delivery of a photography workshop in Berlin and several specialist workshops in London. These workshops covered black-and-white photography, long-exposure photography and brutalist architecture photography. The workshops were designed to improve participants' technical and creative skills whilst providing opportunities for learning in supportive and inclusive environments. A significant proportion of workshop participants were beyond retirement age. The workshops and Berlin photography trip provided valuable opportunities for older adults to pursue a creative hobby, engage in lifelong learning, remain socially active and connect with like-minded individuals. These activities helped reduce social isolation by creating welcoming spaces for participants to share experiences, develop new friendships and engage in meaningful creative activity. Many UK workshop participants were also beyond retirement age and a number attended multiple workshops and activities during the reporting period. This repeat engagement demonstrates the value of the company's activities in supporting social connection, ongoing learning and sustained community participation. The company also delivered a presentation exploring photography in public spaces and urban regeneration, encouraging discussion around community identity, cultural heritage and the role of photography in documenting social and environmental change. Alongside direct delivery activities, the company undertook development work and research into potential future educational and photography initiatives in China with a view to expanding opportunities for cultural exchange, learning and community benefit through photography. All workshops, tutoring, talks and educational activities were delivered directly by the company's directors, Matthew Arnold and Andreea Vas. Both directors are professional photographers with substantial experience in photography education, exhibitions, public speaking and community engagement. In addition to activities delivered directly through the CIC, Matthew Arnold delivered a public presentation at Art & Grind Cafe in Surrey and provided photography services on a pro bono basis for the How Are Things exhibition at Brew Hull. Andreea Vas delivered several educational presentations at the University of the Arts London, including presentations relating to photography and memory studies. She also exhibited work as part of the University's Unfolding Narratives initiative. Both directors continue to share photography projects, educational content, research and reflections on photographic practice through their personal websites and social media channels free of charge, extending access to photography education beyond workshop participants and making professional knowledge available to wider audiences. During the reporting period, presentations, talks, exhibitions and online educational activities reached more than 100 participants and audience members. The company's practical workshops attracted more than 20 participants, with several individuals attending multiple activities. This ongoing engagement demonstrates the development of an active and supportive community focused on creativity, education, wellbeing and lifelong learning.
The company maintains regular dialogue with workshop participants, event attendees, collaborators and members of the photography community through direct discussions, participant feedback, online communications and social media engagement. Feedback received from participants highlighted the value of accessible photography education delivered in supportive and non-competitive environments. Participants particularly valued opportunities for social interaction, shared learning, practical photographic activities and continued engagement through repeat attendance at workshops and events. This feedback informed the company's decision to continue developing specialist photography workshops and community-focused activities that combine creative education, social connection and wellbeing benefits. Strong participation from older adults reinforced the importance of providing opportunities that support lifelong learning and help combat social isolation. Feedback and engagement with participants will continue to inform the development of future workshops, educational activities and community-focused photography programmes.
