Root Cause Project [CIC] has had a great year for deliver and growth. We have continued to support more than 120 veterans with mental health and well-being support through our nature-based program and direct contact. We have delivered over 17 sessions to our veterans, helping them reduce the feeling of isolation and, for those preparing to leave active service, with their loss of role, purpose and transition. We have continued to focus on the roots of the cause, which is trauma informed and encompasses a myriad of mental health challenges, in which we provide the tools needed to enjoy life. Our sessions continue to be green prescribed, combining bushcraft, survival skills, and therapeutic strategies to support Veterans in the North Devon area. We have continued to improve our visibility in the wider community by attending local events, while also helping our attendees to feel connected to the wider community by incorporating them in these events. We were invited to attend Families Day at Commando Training Centre, and enjoyed a great day showcasing what we do during our sessions, while talking to families and past and present members of the armed forces community. As part of this, we contributed resources, manpower and time, to help Hakeford Woods install 400 meters of specialised matting to help with drainage and provide better access for attendees with reduced mobility and wheelchair access. We also helped to build a disabled toilet. These projects not only helped our attendees through small, meaningful task completion and focus, but also helps members of the public - who use the space - to have more freedom to enjoy nature. Root Cause Project and attendees organised and participated in the Welsh 3000 Challenge, which saw a Member of the Directorship [Roy Goddin] and four service users’ summit 15 mountains over 3000 feet in 26 hrs 11 minutes carrying 60Lb Bergens. This was undertaken to raise money for Root Cause, as well as the Royal Marines Charity. We managed to raise a total of £1825, which was shared equally. I think this emphasises the special bond that the Root Cause Project encourages, rekindles and fosters. It also highlights what can be achieved when you pull together people cut from the same cloth, and reminds the individuals participating what they can do, and more importantly, how together we are stronger. Our year culminated in receiving a Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector award for the provision of ‘Physical Wellbeing’. This was a great achievement for Root Cause, and helps validate its importance in the work we do. We were also mentioned in the Parliamentary Debate [HANSAR] on the 26th June 2025, which highlighted the work we are carrying out, and the need for these services. Again, it was a special honour to have been singled out.
Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) – Session funding Tesco (Stronger Smart Community Project) – Session funding Devon County Council – Marketing Asda – Bucket rattling, unrestricted Welsh 3000 donations – Unrestricted funding RMB Chivenor – Maintaining ties with the Royal Marines family and the community.
