Principal activities of the company

We held our 9th annual "A Matter of Life and Death Festival" designed for different ages groups, exploring cultural practices and creating opportunities for discussion around death, dying and loss. Events included Memorial Tattoos, A Pop Up Death Event in Birmingham Library, Death Cafes, To Absent Friends, Poetry events, nature walks and Meet The Undertakers.

Company activities and impact

We held our 9th annual "A Matter of Life and Death Festival" designed for different ages groups, exploring cultural practices and creating opportunities for discussion around death, dying and loss. Events included Death Cafes, To Absent Friends, poetry events, a night discussing remembrance tattoos in a tattoo parlour, a memory walk, Meet the Undertakers and art classes. We also held a new event - Pop Up Death. This was a large pop in event at the Library of Birmingham with 10 services and artists displaying signposting, producing interactive displays and displaying artwork. Over 100 people attended and people were even interviewed for Its a Death Sentence Podcast. Feedback from this years festival included: "It's so helpful discussing what can be so difficult with others who want to do the same." "It was warmly and capably facilitated and felt a safe space to connect with. I was interested in the discussion different global traditions and perspectives on grief." "What a beautiful experience, turning a hardship in life/loss into an experience which fills the heart. Thank you so much." BrumYODO have had an active presence on social media and have produced a number of blogs, newsletters and press releases to keep the public engaged with the topic of death. We have continued to update our website with events and useful resources.

Consultation with stakeholders

BrumYODO have continued to actively support the Birmingham Compassionate City Charter network steering group and lead on the Art & Culture workstream, feeding into the wider city strategy with wider stakeholders. We have continued to work alongside our existing partners and this year have gained the support of new community assets including Stirchley Art Room, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham Central Library and Thimblemill Library.
