Melton Space CIC continued to operate a not-for-profit shared community workshop in Melton Mowbray. The space provided local people with access to tools, equipment, workspace and practical knowledge for making, repairing, craft, creative and technical activities. Facilities included woodworking and hand tools, sewing equipment, a laser cutter, 3D printers and electronics workstations. Members, volunteers and visitors were able to work on their own projects, share skills and learn from one another in a welcoming and sociable environment. Community workshops and regular repair sessions gave people opportunities to develop practical and creative skills and to receive help repairing broken household items. This helped make equipment and skills accessible to people who might not have suitable space, tools or expertise at home. The company’s activities benefited the community by encouraging creativity, practical learning, collaboration and social connection. Repairing and reusing items also reduced waste and helped prevent usable objects and materials from being sent to landfill. Melton Space continued to provide an affordable community resource where local people could meet, make, fix, create and share ideas and resources.
The company’s stakeholders include its members, volunteers, workshop users, visitors, local residents and community organisations with which it works. Consultation took place primarily through informal conversations during workshop sessions, events and open mornings, as well as through email, social media and discussions between members and directors. Members were encouraged to suggest activities, equipment and improvements and could participate in decisions about how the space was used and developed. Feedback helped inform the workshops and repair activities offered, the availability and organisation of tools and resources, and the practical arrangements for accessing and using the space. The company continued to adapt its activities in response to the interests and needs expressed by members, visitors and other community participants.
