  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, net of discounts and value added taxes. Turnover includes revenue earned from the sale of goods and from the rendering of services. Turnover from the sale of goods is recognised when the significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods have transferred to the buyer. Turnover from the rendering of services is recognised by reference to the stage of completion of the contract. The stage of completion of a contract is measured by comparing the costs incurred for work performed to date to the total estimated contract costs.

    Tangible fixed assets depreciation policy

Tangible fixed assets are measured at cost less accumulative depreciation and any accumulative impairment losses. Depreciation is provided on all tangible fixed assets, other than freehold land, at rates calculated to write off the cost, less estimated residual value, of each asset evenly over its expected useful life.

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

KITABNA - OUR BOOK CIC

Company Number: 13166431 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 January 2026

Company activities and impact

Between January 2025 and January 2026, Kitabna – Our Book launched two major projects: 1) the translation of the Kitabna Toolkit into seven new languages, with the support of Arts Council England and shared in the MHPSS network and 2) The Language, Belonging and Women informal ESOL Programme for refugee and newcomer women in South West England. In late 2022 we partnered with Cardiff University and two Armenian NGOs; Educational and Cultural Bridges, and Cultural and Social Narratives Laboratory. Together, we worked on cultural memory and peaceful dialogue to plan a workshop series. In these workshops, Kitabna could share our story-writing methodology with psychologists, educators and social workers supporting children affected by the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh/Artsakh conflict. We secured funding from the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council to deliver in-person story-writing workshops in Yerevan, Armenia. These workshops were delivered in April 2023, with the secondary goal of producing a toolkit of therapeutic story-writing skills to share with children. The funding to produce this toolkit was secured in November 2023, and the project continued into 2024, leading to the successful development, pilot and launch of Our Toolkit, and our collection of children’s stories, Finding our Way: Tales from Armenia (https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/community/our-local-community-projects/community-projects-in-wales-and-further-afield/2025-projects/producing-a-toolkit-for-story-co-creation-with-refugees-from-nagorno-karabakh). In March 2025, Kitabna founder Helen Patuck was able to secure funds from Arts Council England to translate our toolkit (https://www.kitabna.org/our-toolkit.html) into Arabic, French, Polish, Ukrainian, Pashto and Romanian. These were shared with the MHPSS Network’s Children and Family Resources centre. In September 2025, Kitabna applied to the South West Council ESOL Network for funds from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to run an 18 session programme for Afghan, Ukrainian and Hong Konger women resettled in the UK. This programme is called The Language, Belonging and Women in Action Programme, and it combines ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) with wellbeing activities such as swimming, book club, creative writing, dance classes and visiting local libraries for resettled women living in isolation in rural England. Our Programme launched in January 2026 and ran across Dorset, Bristol and Somerset (https://www.kitabna.org/language--belonging-and-women-in-action-esol.html). Consultation with stakeholders

Regarding community consulation: in order to start any project, in-depth conversations are instigated in response to any request for collaboration for workshop and/or resource delivery. This has taken place in the forms of meetings, whereby projects have been discussed in terms of a needs assessment. Needs assessment is often provided by the potential collaborating organisation, who have established networks in the communities we work with. In the case of resource creation, community consultation has been carried out in the form of: quantitative and qualitative surveys developed with stakeholders and distributed with identified beneficiaries via networks of trust and online survey tools; story-writing workshops intended to understand and record the concerns, wishes and needs of the intended community; feedback milestones in the course of the creation of resources, whereby a resource is developed and shared with stakeholders, and wherever possible, members of the intended community, for their review and comments.
