The company organises a month-long, high-quality contemporary arts festival called Capital of Dance that amplifies Blackpool’s unique dance heritage. It delivers over 200 dance events and is designated a signature event in the Blackpool cultural strategy. Endorsed by local government and major resort partners, it provides a “badge” or rallying point for Blackpool to market itself nationally and internationally as the rightful “Capital of Dance,” promoting pride, community cohesion, and economic impacts through the arts. Community Outcomes: 1,850 Blackpool residents have participated in free dance events at the festival; 245 schoolchildren from three Blackpool schools have attended two weeks of free dance workshops. 90 Magic Club attendees, plus House of Wingz young students, experienced free workshops pre-festival. As a result of Capital of Dance’s pilot event in 2024, three local House of Wingz teenage dancers were invited to join Sadlers Wells NYDC on funded places. They enjoyed a year of expert training from Boy Blue Ent, which culminated in a performance at the resort in 2025. This was a free performance on the promenade. As well as the general public, their peers and family were in the audience. The three local dancers who were now part of Sadlers Wells provided leadership and ambassador roles, giving aspiration to Blackpool dancers. 29 local young people auditioned, and three have been offered places (an additional one on reserve) for Sadler’s Wells National Youth Dance Company for 2025/26. 38 local young dancers from four Blackpool dance schools attended a workshop with World Street Dance Champion Marlon Swoosh Wallen, creator of dance group Flawless. Blackpool Council, One World Orchestra and Capital of Dance delivered the Blackpool Intercultural Music and Dance pilot. Outreach music and dance workshops. Sixteen volunteers completed 39 volunteer opportunities across the month. Commercial Outcomes: Tickets booked directly through www.capitalofdance.com: 1,744 (+555.6% 266). Individual donations for free event sign-ups of 488 (+2223.8% 21), 21.4% tickets and registrations from FY post codes, 88.6% tickets and registration from resort visitors 36% of resort visitors were staying in the resort, 74% were day trippers. Daily free event footfall count is three times (+302.2%) the footfall from COD pilot in 2024. A Disco World Record attempt achieved 546 choreographed dancers (adults and families) with 895 in attendance (33% local dancers, 66% visitors). 153 dancers and creatives and 25 local producers and technicians received paid engagements for direct participation. 75 dancers and creatives and 20 producers and technicians were compensated for their contributions to co-productions. All engagements were subject to fair pay practices, meaning everyone engaged was paid at least the minimum wage and in line with sector standards or union agreements for artists and arts workers.
