Our organisation is the UK's first dedicated children's art gallery, based in Brixton Market, providing children with a permanent space to explore, create and experience art in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Our activities are designed to increase access to creative opportunities for children, particularly those who face financial, social or educational barriers to participating in arts and cultural activities. We run a programme of workshops, holiday activities,artist-led projects, exhibitions and creative events, encouraging children to experiment, develop their imagination and creative confidence, and express their individual ideas. A key part of our community benefit is our provision of free art classes and free outreach projects. We work with local schools to bring high-quality, hands on art experiences directly into educational settings, providing children with opportunities that schools may otherwise be unable to afford. We also provide free or subsidised opportunities within the gallery classes so that participation is not dependant on a family's ability to pay. Our aim being that children from the local community can access meaningful cultural and creative experiences and feel that there is a place where their ideas and creativity are valued and celebrated. Our presence within Brixton Market also contributes to the wider local community and economy. By bringing children, parents, carers, schools and visitors into the market for exhibitions, workshops and creative activities, we increase footfall and encourage families to spend time within the market and its surrounding businesses. This helps to create a more vibrant and welcoming environment supporting the wider ecosystem of local traders and businesses. Ultimately, our aim is to create lasting social and cultural value by providing children with access to creativity and culture, strengthen connections between schools, families, and the local community, and contribute positively to the vitality of Brixton as a place to visit, work and live.
Our key stakeholders are the children who participate in our programmes, their parents and carers, local schools and teachers, artists and creative practitioners, and the wider Brixton community and local businesses. We consult with our stakeholder through informal feedback and ongoing conversations with children, parents, carers, teachers and artists. Feedback is gathered during and following workshops and outreach projects, through conversations with participating schools and families, and through observations of children's engagement and response to activities. Feedback is recorded in forms and, where agreed to via recorded interviews. We use this feedback to shape our programme, including the workshops and projects we offer, the needs of participating children and schools, and how we can make our activities more accessible and relevant to our local community. This process is particularly rigorous as we need to be able to provide substantial documentation to the Arts Council for continued funding.
