Through the annual Bristol School Arts Fund we awarded grants to state-funded secondary schools and Alternative Learning Provisions to increase opportunities for young people to engage in the arts. The grants were spent on materials, trips to exhibitions, art clubs, sensory sessions, high-quality equipment and visiting-artist workshops.The community benefit by receiving money to spend on the things they need, to positively impact students’ grades, understanding and confidence. The annual Dreamtime Fellowship supports recent art graduates to provide a secure stepping stone onto their career path. This year one artist was given their own studio space at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio for the first time, a bursary of £5,000 and mentoring sessions with Luke. Winning an art fellowship or residency is extremely hard to achieve as a young artist. Dreamtime is a way emerging artists can prove themselves as reliable and serious. The community benefit by receiving free studio space, money towards their living costs, and mentoring to support the development of their careers. Jerram Foundation has established an annual bursary place within Day School’s alternative arts education programme, directly supporting artist-led initiatives within the vibrant city of Bristol. This year we have supported one artist to take part in Day School, with a bursary. On completion of the year long programme they said: “I wanted to express how incredibly grateful I am for the bursary that enabled me to join Day School. As a single parent with no second income, I simply could not have taken up the opportunity otherwise and it has genuinely been life changing. Having access to a studio again after more than twenty years has transformed my practice, giving me the space, focus and community I have long been missing. Thank you again for your generosity and belief in artists like me, it has made an enormous difference, and I have worked incredibly hard this year because I never wanted to squander the opportunity.”
The schools we support have told us that since receiving our grants more young people are taking up creative subjects at GCSE and A-Level and are acquiring skills that extend beyond their regular curriculum. They are also achieving higher grades as there is a significant improvement in the quality of work and in their confidence in creative subjects. All Dreamtime candidates have told us that they have continued to work in the art world since completing the fellowship, including with companies such as Aardman, Wake the Tiger and Rising Arts Agency.This positive feedback has allowed us to continue to justify continuing this fellowhisp programme, and bringing on new partners. On completion of his fellowship, the 2025 recipient celebrated the acquisition of his new book, 349, as part of the British Library‘s artist book collection, which is a remarkable achievement!
