Strut Safe operates a UK-wide support line for people who are travelling solo at night; we stay on the phone until our callers make it to their destination safely. We undertake recruitment and training of Volunteer Call Handlers to take these calls; these processes have been developed over the course of five years. Our line is not for advice, but rather company, as we understand for many the experience of walking/travelling alone in the dark comes with a number of fears/concerns that can be mitigated or alleviated by having someone to speak to. Furthermore, our volunteers can signpost callers towards more suitable services, such as the Samaritans if needs be. Since 2021 when we took approximately 700 calls from callers in the UK, we have increased our service and reach, resulting in taking 1515 calls in 2025, amounting to 20606 minutes of support and company to our callers. Most of our calls come from London, the South West and Scotland. Our busiest hours are between 21:00-01:00. We have received a great deal of positive feedback from callers, and supporters of our service; we now have a number of repeat callers who rely on the service as a tool in protecting or enhancing their own mental/physical wellbeing. Many of our callers are people who work in the nightlife industry, i.e. bars and restaurants, or who work shifts i.e. nurses, and many people call because the public transport in their area doesn't operate at late hours. In 2025, we expanded our opening hours from Fridays and Saturdays (7pm-3am) and Sundays (7pm-1am), to include Thursday (7pm-1am). Our other activities include fundraising through donations, grant applications and corporate partnerships. We operate social media pages (Instagram, Facebook) to promote the service, recruit volunteers, and share information related to our mission statement. We also focus a great deal on leadership development within the organisation. There are many opportunities for our volunteer call handlers to involve themselves in other aspects of the organisation, including: recruitment, fundraising, press, outreach and admin. This means our volunteers can build their own experiences for further work, or simply for a sense of accomplishment and enrichment.
Internally: Volunteers, consulted in a manner of ways: Slack, meetings hosted online, including our Annual General Meeting and surveys. Externally: Service users and funders, consulted through social media, our website and email We apply for grants from funding bodies and have previously taken on feedback regarding our unsuccessful applications.
