Business United CIC runs Brighton United, a community initiative for people from Global Majority backgrounds living and working in Brighton and Hove. Its purpose is to build belonging and connection, to give under-represented people a visible platform, and to help local businesses and venues become places where those people feel welcome. This was the company's first year of activity. During the financial year the company's activities benefited the community in the following ways: - It held a public launch event on 11 March 2025 at Projects Nile House in Brighton. 72 tickets were issued. Attendees were consulted on what the community needs most, and the responses shaped the programme that followed. - It ran a storytelling and community-building evening, Storytelling that Builds Community, on 24 April 2025 at Projects Nile House. 41 tickets were issued. - It ran a third gathering, Sparking Collaboration through Cultural Connections, on 17 July 2025. 31 tickets were issued. - It delivered a Black History Month programme in partnership with PLATF9RM in Hove. The programme opened on 30 September 2025 with a speaker event featuring Cecilia Harvey, Liana Fricker and Fezile Sibanda, included a Lunch and Learn session on Innovation in Diversity, and closed with a community evening on 3 November 2025. Speakers and facilitators from the community were paid for their contributions. - It supported a sickle cell awareness campaign with branding and promotional design. - A community survey gathered 42 complete responses on the barriers people experience locally. The most frequently chosen priorities were visible under-represented leadership, access to funding and resources, and networking and mentorship. These findings are guiding the company's next phase. - The company joined Community Works, the Brighton and Hove voluntary sector network, in March 2025, and worked with local organisations including Positive City CIC, which made a donation to support the programme. Events were free or low cost, with tickets priced to cover food and venue costs only. No director received any remuneration.
The company's stakeholders are people from Global Majority backgrounds living and working in Brighton and Hove, the local businesses and venues that host and support its events, and the partner community organisations it works alongside, including PLATF9RM, Positive City CIC and Community Works. Stakeholders were consulted in three ways during the year. A community survey was run at events and gathered 42 complete responses on the barriers people experience locally. Attendees were asked for their views in open discussion at each event, beginning with the launch event on 11 March 2025, where responses shaped the programme that followed. A follow-up organising meeting in June 2025 brought participants directly into planning for communications, grant applications and a proposed mentorship hub. The company acted on the feedback in three practical ways: it made the participatory format of its events clearer in invitations, it built networking time into each event, and it moved its autumn programme to a partner venue, PLATF9RM in Hove. The survey findings, which identified visible under-represented leadership, access to funding and resources, and networking and mentorship as the top priorities, are guiding the company's plans for the coming year.
