Company activities and impact

Through the West Lakeland community interest company (CiC), formed in 2021, a community of 40 farmers are tackling changing agricultural policy and the relationship between farming, the environment and climate change. The West Lakes CiC vision is to ensure the long-term stability of traditional, nature-friendly farming and land management in an area covering around 25,000 acres. It runs from Ennerdale to Wasdale Head, and takes in three commons: Kinniside, Stockdale Moor and Nether Wasdale. Activities 2025-2026 1 Continued engagement with 40 farms through Knowledge transfer events 2 Commenced a training programme for 4 young people to become agricultural advisors with funding provided by The Royal Countryside Fund 3 Purchase of equipment with FiPL funding including a mobile sheep dipper, Bracken Bruiser and Post knocker to assist famers in the control of infectious sheep diseases, management of the landscape through control of bracken and support the creation of hedges and environment management through new fencing. 4 Water & Terrestrial Ecosystem Services Delivery through Defra Natural Environment Investment Readiness Fund (NEIRF) Grant developing Priority areas for delivery of water stewardship through Replenish projects within West Lakeland. 5 Participation in the National Sheep Association led Gazing for Good Project funded by FiPL. Consultation with stakeholders

Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) – LDNPA hold the Farming in Protected Landscapes funding. We put forward our plans which are then approved for funding and we provide monthly feedback to the LDNPA on our activities. We hold regular meetings with members of the LDNPA team to discuss potential activities to support farmers and the environment. National Trust (NT) – we continue to engage with the NT seeking opportunities to collaborate in Nature recovery projects within our catchment area and on the farms within our group. West Cumbria Rivers Trust (WCRT) –WCRT are a main collaborator with the NEIRF project. Replenish, developed by The Rivers Trust, is an established approach designed for water system management and has been used to explore opportunities to improve water quality and water flow across our catchment area. Environment Agency (EA) - we continue to engage and inform the EA on activities associated with water stewardship. Sellafield Ltd - Sellafield abstract water from the Calder and Irt catchments. This means that there is an intrinsic value to Sellafield in continued access to clean, plentiful and reliable water for their needs. There are 12 different intervention types that can be delivered through the Replenish approach. National Sheep Association – collaboration in Grazing for Good project funded by Defra FiPL. This has led to a review document that has been shared with our farmers, Local farmers – we have consulted local farmers through surveys to ask their opinions on a number of issues relating to farming and the environment leading to workshops for example on grassland management and soil testing.
