MAD LEAP CIC completed delivery of its project scaling its circular food model SOURCE, in East London. The mushroom farm continues to operate and three green skills training (hydroponics, sustainable gardening and mushroom growing) were revised and accredited. A new European collaborative project commenced with MAD LEAP developing and delivering a scaled community anaerobic digester next to a social housing estate to process food waste from residents to produce biofertiliser and bioenergy. This is designed to educate communities and businesses on the value of local bioresources to reduce waste and increase recycling rates, The aim is to establish an economically sustainable model that can be replicated across social housing, new developments, food and beverage businesses etc. where social, environmental, educational and economic benefits can be realised. MAD LEAP also hosts site visits to council officers and university groups.
Social housing residents were engaged through: 1 - door knocking, 2 - flyering, 3 - green skills training 4 - consultation workshops, and 5 - public events. We established a Living Lab Steering Group with key stakeholders from the local community, local authorities, circular economy think tanks, community organisations etc. to help inform and learn from the food waste pilot implemented this year.
