During the year Pathways for Change CIC undertook development and preparatory work aimed at tackling food insecurity, improving skills and creating pathways into employment for people experiencing disadvantage. Working with York St John University, preparatory work was undertaken towards establishing a community food pantry. The developing model aims to provide a dignified and sustainable response to food insecurity, including access to affordable and culturally appropriate food, while connecting people with wider community support, volunteering, skills development and opportunities to increase independence. Pathways to Change also developed a targeted employment and skills pathway for women from ethnic minority backgrounds who may experience barriers to entering or returning to work. An initial five-week hospitality programme has been developed in partnership with the Empire Suite, combining classroom learning with practical experience in a working hospitality environment, practical assessment, CV and interview preparation and potential progression into employment. Training covers customer service, communication, teamwork, organisation, time management, professionalism and practical food and beverage service, alongside equality, cultural awareness and inclusive workplace practice. Collectively, these activities are developing an integrated pathway through which people experiencing economic and social disadvantage can access immediate support while building confidence, skills, work experience and routes towards employment and greater independence.
