COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

BRAE RURAL ENERGY HUB COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Company Number: SC832543 (Scotland)

Year Ending: 31 December 2025

Company activities and impact

Our Community Interest Company was incorporated on 23 December 2024 with the aim of establishing a local hub that provides practical, community-focused support to help Shetlanders reduce energy costs and carbon emissions, make more sustainable choices, and access shared local resources and services. The concept for the Hub was developed through the Rural Energy Hubs project, funded by Innovate UK and led by Shetland Islands Council, Aquatera, Orkney Islands Council, Community Energy Scotland and EMEC. As part of this project, the local youth and community centre that will house the Hub underwent a major retrofit. Our CIC, made up of local volunteer directors, was established to pilot and manage the Hub and support the long-term aim of it becoming a community-led service. The community centre was originally expected to be completed in August 2025. Unfortunately, building works took significantly longer than anticipated, and as of 31 December 2025, we were still awaiting access to the premises. As a result, we were unable to begin delivering our planned public services during this reporting period. Despite this delay, the year was an important period of preparation. Our activities included: Recruiting additional local volunteer directors through a community information session, expanding the board from its original two directors. This event also gave the local community a chance to understand the Rural Energy Hubs project. Developing the governance framework for the CIC, including policies and procedures to support good governance and effective management. Designing and planning the services the Hub will provide, including energy advice, e-bike hire, meeting room hire and co-working space, including development of customer journeys and booking systems. Applying for funding to support future staffing costs. Keeping the community informed of building progress through social media. Preparing the Hub's website and communications materials, including posters, booklets and display banners. Undertaking energy advice training and professional development to ensure staff are equipped to provide high-quality support when the Hub opens. Although the delay in accessing the building prevented us from delivering the full range of planned services during this period, the work undertaken has established strong foundations for the organisation. We have developed robust governance, built valuable partnerships, engaged with the community and designed services that are ready to be delivered once the premises become operational. Community Benefit During this reporting period, although the Hub was not yet operational due to delays with the building works, we have already begun creating community benefit through engagement activities, local events, partnership development and opportunities for residents to influence the services being developed. This engagement has helped ensure that the Hub’s future services are shaped by local needs and feedback. ur work in this period will allow us to provide benefits to: Shetland households, including those experiencing challenges with energy costs, by providing access to independent energy advice, information and support to improve energy efficiency and reduce household bills. Local residents interested in sustainable living, by providing opportunities to access shared resources, learn about low-carbon choices and participate in community activities relating to energy, climate and transport. People seeking affordable access to workspace and community facilities, through the planned provision of co-working space, meeting facilities and shared resources. Residents who may benefit from improved access to active travel options, through the planned e-bike hire service and activities promoting cycling and sustainable transport. Local community groups, organisations and businesses, by providing opportunities for collaboration, shared learning and partnership working around energy, sustainability and community development.
