2025 was another busy and challenging year for Alongside Africa, but as usual the results on the ground were significant and we continue to punch above our weight in terms of how much is delivered with so few resources.
During the year 25 small loans were made to women's support groups in Rubanda district. These loans are the only source of finance available to these groups and are vital in helping the group members to become more self-sufficient. The business acumen displayed by these groups with most of them doubling or even tripling the loan value over a period of six months. Each group contains around 20 members, and each member will be responsible for supporting at least fine family members, so in total this programme will have benefitted approximately 2,500 people at no cost to Alongside Africa. All loans were repaid on time and have been redistributed to other groups in the region. In my opinion this is the unsung highlight of our ongoing work.
The Amasiko Halfway House project continued to deliver during the year with 20 girls being trained and able to start their own small businesses, supporting not only themselves but their families and communities.
Our Give a Child a Chance programme supported 127 children during year, providing education as well as medical, counselling and spiritual support.
A key development during the year was the establishment of Alongside Africa Australia, an independent registered non-profit organisation which was set up by Alex Sibbald, a UK board member who relocated back to his home country of Australia.
Our board underwent several changes during the year with the departure of Dr William and Sally Nolan in November 2025 and the appointment of Cathy Ford as Treasurer at the same time. Our thanks to Bill and Sally for their time on the board and to Mike Huddart who was one of the founding board members and who served as our Treasurer for 15 years. I was reappointed as the board Chair.
Income for the year was £89,000, in increase of £5,000 over the previous year, but this included a very generous donation of £15,000 received towards the end of the year, so overall our core income was down by £10,000. This was partially offset by approximately £2,800 raised by Alongside Africa Australia.
The year ended on a high note with a very generous donation of £15,000 from a long-time supporter, which will enable us to purchase a reliable 4x4 vehicle early in the coming year.
