Financial instruments
The Company recognises a financial asset or financial liability when it becomes a party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.
Financial assets and financial liabilities are offset, and the net amount presented in the financial statements, only when there is a legally enforceable right to offset the recognised amounts and the Company intends either to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.
Basic financial assets
Basic financial assets include trade and other debtors, cash and cash equivalents and certain investments.
Debt instruments are initially recognised at transaction price, including transaction costs, unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction. Where an arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, the financial asset is initially measured at the present value of the future receipts, discounted at a market rate of interest for a similar debt instrument.
Debt instruments are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method. Where the effect of discounting is immaterial, short-term debtors are measured at the undiscounted amount of the cash or other consideration expected to be received.
Current asset investments
Current asset investments in ordinary shares and other qualifying equity instruments are accounted for as basic financial instruments in accordance with Section 11 of FRS 102.
Investments that are publicly traded, or whose fair value can otherwise be measured reliably, are initially and subsequently measured at fair value. Transaction costs attributable to investments measured at fair value through profit or loss are recognised as an expense when incurred. Changes in fair value, along with realised gains and losses on disposal, are recognised in profit or loss.
Where fair value cannot be measured reliably, investments are measured at cost less impairment.
Investments are presented as current assets where they are not intended for use on a continuing basis in the Company’s activities.
Dividend income is recognised in profit or loss when the Company’s right to receive payment is established.
Impairment of financial assets
Financial assets measured at cost or amortised cost are assessed at each reporting date for objective evidence of impairment.
Where objective evidence of impairment exists, an impairment loss is recognised in profit or loss. For financial assets measured at amortised cost, the impairment loss is measured as the difference between the asset’s carrying amount and the present value of estimated future cash flows discounted at the asset’s original effective interest rate.
If an impairment loss subsequently decreases and the decrease can be related objectively to an event occurring after the impairment was recognised, the previously recognised impairment loss is reversed. The reversal is limited so that the resulting carrying amount does not exceed the amount that would have been recognised had no impairment occurred.

Classification of financial liabilities and equity
Financial liabilities and equity instruments are classified according to the substance of the contractual arrangements entered into. An equity instrument is any contract that evidences a residual interest in the assets of the Company after deducting all of its liabilities.
Basic financial liabilities
Basic financial liabilities, including trade and other creditors, are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction. Where an arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, the financial liability is initially measured at the present value of the future payments, discounted at a market rate of interest for a similar debt instrument.
Basic financial liabilities are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method. Where the effect of discounting is immaterial, short-term creditors are measured at the undiscounted amount of the cash or other consideration expected to be paid.
Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services acquired in the ordinary course of business. Creditors are classified as current liabilities where payment is due within one year or less. Otherwise, they are presented as non-current liabilities.
Equity instruments
Equity instruments issued by the Company are recognised at the proceeds received, net of directly attributable transaction costs.
Dividends payable on equity instruments are recognised as liabilities when they are no longer at the discretion of the Company.
Taxation
Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Statement of Income and Retained Earnings, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity.
Current or deferred taxation assets and liabilities are not discounted.
Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date.
Deferred tax
Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the balance sheet date.
Timing differences arise from the inclusion of income and expenses in tax assessments in periods different from those in which they are recognised in financial statements. Deferred tax is measured using tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the year end and that are expected to apply to the reversal of the timing difference.
Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits.
Research and development
Expenditure on research and development is written off in the year in which it is incurred.
