It has been a privilege to complete my first full season as Chairman of Crediton Rugby Football Club. Looking back over the past twelve months, there is much to be proud of. While success is often measured by league tables and silverware, what continues to impress me most is the strength of our club as a whole. From our youngest mini and junior players through to our senior teams, veterans and walking rugby, Crediton RFC continues to provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy our great game.
Our First XV enjoyed an excellent campaign in another highly competitive Regional 2 South West league. After a challenging start to the season, the squad gathered momentum, producing some outstanding performances to finish fifth in the table and secure a place in the Regional 1 promotion play offs. Although the play off against Tiverton ultimately proved a step too far, reaching that stage was a fantastic achievement and provides a strong platform on which to build next season.
The Second XV faced a difficult season following promotion to Counties 2 Devon. The increased standard of competition, coupled with the demands of supporting the First XV throughout the season, meant results were sometimes hard to come by. However, the squad showed tremendous resilience and commitment throughout the campaign, retaining their place in the division whilst continuing to provide an important stepping stone for players progressing through the club.
The Third XV once again demonstrated why they are such an important asset to Crediton RFC. Finishing third in the Devon Merit Table only tells part of the story. Throughout the season the Third XV fulfilled additional fixtures outside of the league, providing valuable playing opportunities for veterans, colts stepping into senior rugby and players returning from injury or developing their game. Their flexibility and willingness to represent the club whenever called upon make them an invaluable part of our senior playing structure and an essential link in our player pathway.
Our Women's XV continued to strengthen both on and off the field, finishing fifth in Women's NC1 South West (West). The squad produced some excellent performances throughout the season and continues to foster a fantastic team spirit and culture. The continued growth of women's rugby at Crediton remains an important part of the club's future and we look forward to seeing the section continue to flourish.
Our Colts enjoyed another outstanding season, reaching the Devon Cup semi finals and continuing to demonstrate why they are such an important part of the club. While success on the pitch is always welcome, the true measure of the Colts programme is the development of players into senior rugby, and this season was a tremendous success in that respect. An impressive eleven players made their senior debuts across the club, underlining the strength of our player pathway. One of the season's standout moments came when Ollie Harris marked his First XV debut by scoring a try in front of his proud
father and Club Director, Jay Harris. Fellow Colt Charlie Cookson also enjoyed an outstanding first season in senior rugby, finishing as the First XV's leading try scorer. The representative honours earned by our players were equally impressive, with players selected to represent Devon at Under 17 and Under 18 level, while Solomon Plowman went one step further by earning selection for the South West Under 18s. These achievements are a credit to the players, coaches and everyone involved in developing our young talent and demonstrate the strength of the pathway from our Junior and Colts
sections into senior rugby.
Unfortunately, the Veterans endured a disappointing season, with player availability making it difficult to fulfil fixtures and ultimately resulting in only one match being played. While frustrating, this has prompted wider discussions around the future format of veterans rugby across Devon. We look forward to seeing how this develops and hope to see the section return stronger in the seasons ahead.
Our Walking Rugby section continues to establish itself as an important part of the club, providing an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy rugby in a fun, social and inclusive environment. It perfectly reflects our ambition to ensure that Crediton RFC truly is a club for everyone.
The Junior Section remains the heartbeat of Crediton RFC and one of our greatest strengths. The continued growth in participation across both boys' and girls' rugby is testament to the dedication of our coaches, volunteers and parents, all of whom freely give their time to develop the next generation of players. There were many highlights throughout the season, including the Under 15s proudly hosting the Devon Festival, welcoming almost thirty teams to Crediton before reaching the Plate Final. Our Under 16s enjoyed trophy success, while the Under 14s reached the final of a highly competitive
Sevens tournament. Alongside these team achievements, a number of players earned representative honours through the Devon pathway and academy system, demonstrating the quality of coaching and player development taking place throughout the club.
None of these achievements would be possible without the incredible commitment of our volunteers. Whether coaching, refereeing, maintaining our pitches, serving behind the bar, organising events, helping in the kitchen or giving up countless hours behind the scenes, our volunteers are the lifeblood of Crediton RFC. On behalf of everyone associated with the club, I would like to extend my sincere thanks for everything you do.
I would also like to thank our sponsors and supporters for their continued generosity. Their investment allows us to provide rugby for hundreds of people each week and continues to play a vital role in the success and sustainability of our club.
Away from the playing field, perhaps the most significant development during the year has been the continued progress towards our future home at Creedy Bridge. After many years of planning and hard work, the project has now moved from aspiration to delivery. Construction of the club's first grass pitch is due to commence during the summer, supported by substantial funding from the Football Foundation and the RFU, marking another major milestone in the club's long term development. While there remains much work ahead before the full relocation is realised, this is a hugely exciting step forward and one that will benefit generations of Crediton rugby players to come.
Finally, I would like to thank the Directors, committee members and everyone who has supported me during my first season as Chairman. It has been an honour to lead such a fantastic club and I am continually inspired by the dedication, passion and community spirit shown by so many people.
Crediton RFC has enjoyed another successful year, but more importantly it continues to evolve and grow. Whether measured by the number of young players coming through our ranks, the strength of our senior teams, the dedication of our volunteers or the exciting progress at Creedy Bridge, the future of our club has never looked brighter. I look forward to continuing that journey together and thank everyone for the part they play in making Crediton RFC the special club it is.
