During this financial year, OMA Bikes Projects CIC advanced active travel, community education, and vocational training within the local area. Key activities included delivering our Cycle Skills for Community Growth project, which provided structured bicycle maintenance and repair training to ex-offenders to boost confidence and long-term employability. We delivered bicycle maintenance classes to the public, teaching them practical skills in bicycle maintenance, puncture repair, brake and gear adjustment and cycle safety checks. We ran group cycle rides to inspire confidence, provide companionship and develop healthy physical and social habits and activities.
Who were the stakeholders? "Local residents, bicycle workshop beneficiaries (including ex-offenders and employment training participants), community groups, and the local authority." How were they consulted? "Through in-person feedback sessions at our workshop, post-programme surveys, public and social media reviews and engagement via local cycling campaigns." What was the outcome? The employment training identified the gaps that exist between the aspirations of employment candidates and the restrictions placed on them by the benefits support systems. We worked to help them narrow that gap but appreciate that there needs to be system change from government to make our efforts more sustained. The workshops have remained a vaulable success to the local community and they are constantly being requested. We do not currently have funding to offer them but we will look for this to continue to support a clear community need.
