Basis of preparing the financial statements |
Turnover |
Turnover represents the fair value of the consideration receivable for plants and related goods supplied in the normal course of business, net of trade discounts, early settlement discounts and value added tax. |
Revenue is recognised when the significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods have passed to the customer, which is normally on delivery to the customer or on collection from the nursery. |

Tangible fixed assets |
| Tangible fixed assets are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation and accumulated impairment losses. Cost includes expenditure directly attributable to bringing the asset into working condition for its intended use. |
| Where the company has an obligation to restore leased properties at the end of the lease term, the estimated present value of the restoration costs is capitalised as part of the cost of the related asset when the obligation arises. The corresponding liability is recognised within provisions. |
| Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off the cost of each asset, less its estimated residual value, over its expected useful life as follows: |
| Plant and machinery etc. | - 33% on cost and 15%/25% on reducing balance |
| Leasehold property restoration asset | - Straight line over the remaining lease term |
| The assets' residual values, useful economic lives and depreciation methods are reviewed, and adjusted prospectively if appropriate, at the end of each reporting period. |
| The carrying amount of tangible fixed assets is reviewed for impairment if events or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying amount may not be recoverable. |
| On disposal of a tangible fixed asset, the difference between the net disposal proceeds and the carrying amount of the asset is recognised in the profit and loss account. |
Stocks |
Stock, comprising plants and related goods held for sale in the normal course of business, is stated at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Cost includes purchase costs, direct labour, and an appropriate proportion of overheads incurred in growing and preparing plants for sale, and is calculated using the first in, first out method. |
Net realisable value represents the estimated selling price less all estimated costs necessary to complete and sell the stock. |
Provision is made for obsolete, slow moving, damaged or deteriorated stock, reflecting the perishable nature of certain plants. |
At each reporting date, stock is reviewed for impairment. Where the carrying amount exceeds net realisable value, the stock is written down accordingly. Any subsequent reversal of such write downs is recognised in profit or loss in the period in which it arises. |
Financial instruments |
| Financial instruments are classified as basic or non-basic following the conditions on FRS 102 Section 11. Basic financial instruments are initially measured at transaction price (including transaction cost) and subsequently recognised at amortised cost using the effective interest method. The company does not have any non-basic financial instruments. |

3. | ACCOUNTING POLICIES - continued |
Taxation |
| Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Statement of Income and Retained Earnings, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity. |
| Current or deferred taxation assets and liabilities are not discounted. |
| Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date. |
Deferred tax |
| Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the balance sheet date. |
| Timing differences arise from the inclusion of income and expenses in tax assessments in periods different from those in which they are recognised in financial statements. Deferred tax is measured using tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the year end and that are expected to apply to the reversal of the timing difference. |
| Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits. |
Leasing commitments |
Rentals payable under operating leases are charged to profit and loss on a straight line basis over the lease term, even if the payments are not made on such a basis. |
Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits |
| The company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the company's pension scheme are charged to profit or loss in the period to which they relate. |
Provisions for liabilities |
Provisions are recognised when the company has a present legal or constructive obligation as a result of a past event, it is probable that the company will be required to settle that obligation, and a reliable estimate can be made of the amount of the obligation. |
Provisions are measured at the best estimate of the expenditure required to settle the obligation at the reporting date. Where the effect of the time value of money is material, provisions are discounted to their present value using a pre-tax discount rate that reflects current market assessments of the time value of money and the risks specific to the liability. |
The unwinding of the discount is recognised within interest payable and similar expenses. |
