During the period 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2025, the Ethical Data Initiative (EDI) continued its mission to advocate for ethical data governance, open science, and responsible research practices globally, with a key focus on supporting low-resourced and vulnerable research environments. Global Alliances & Policy Engagement: - RDA & EDI Strategic Partnership (May 2025): Formalised a major international collaboration with the Research Data Alliance (RDA) to co-develop educational frameworks and advocate for global responsible data sharing. - Research Assessment & Ethics Discussion Series: Led a global series in partnership with international bodies (including CoARA, CODATA, DORA, and RDA) advocating for research assessment reforms that prioritise data integrity and ethical stewardship over narrow quantitative metrics. - UK Policy Guidance: Provided expert advisory support to national bodies, including contributing to UKRI Smart Data Research UK’s ethical standards framework for smart data use. High-Level Advocacy & International Conferences: - European Commission Conference (June 2025): Co-organised a high-level conference in Brussels in partnership with the European Commission focused on reforming research assessment in the European digital space. - TUM and Exeter Institutional Hubs: Expanded operational integration between the Technical University of Munich (TUM Think Tank) and the University of Exeter to deliver cross-institutional research on data ethics and technomoral futures. Research, Education & Data Ethics Training: - Data Clinics Programme (January to October 2025): Co-designed and executed practical "Data Clinics" for postgraduate and early-career researchers, including targeted sessions examining the implementation of the European Health Data Space and the ethical risks of AI in fintech across Africa. - Open-Access Knowledge Dissemination: Published research spotlights, policy briefs, and expert blogs on topics such as AI explainability, environmental citizen science risks, and recommender systems for social good to democratise access to data ethics resources.
The EDI actively engaged a broad international community comprising academic researchers, policy-makers, data stewards, funding bodies, and civil society organisations through interactive events, working groups, and open consultations. Annual Multi-Stakeholder Town Hall (31 March 2025): - Hosted the flagship annual event, "Shaping the Future of Data Ethics: EDI Town Hall 2025" at TUM and online. - Brought together over 150 global EDI Affiliates, researchers, and policy networks. Keynote contributions were delivered by Hilary Hanahoe (Secretary General, RDA) and Prof. XiaoLi Meng (Harvard University / Harvard Data Science Review). - Held dedicated co-design workshops with attendees to collaboratively map out future priorities for data ethics education and open-access resources. Interactive Workshops & Knowledge Exchange Seminars: Research, Values, and Intervention Workshop (22 May 2025): Interactive session exploring the ethico-political implications of AI and large datasets, guiding participants through practical interventions to address socio-technical tensions in data work. Community Affiliates Network & Public Engagement: Expanded the EDI Affiliates Network, providing a global platform for practitioners and researchers to publish guest research spotlights, share best practices, and contribute to international policy consultations. Art & Science Public Engagement (January 2025 Launch): Released Data Shadows, an AHRC-supported collaborative art film exploring loss, decontextualisation, and ethical appropriation of data, created to engage non-academic audiences with abstract data governance issues.
