Irish Moiled Cattle Society – Trustees Report 2025

Prepared by Chairperson Dan Bull

The Board of Directors is pleased to present the Trustees Report for 2025, a year marked by continued progress, strong member engagement, and meaningful steps toward securing the long term future of the Irish Moiled breed.

Breed Development & Strategic Progress

Throughout 2025, the Society remained focused on modernising its services and strengthening the position of the Irish Moiled within an evolving agricultural landscape. The ongoing refinement of the Irish Moiled Breeding Programme—now at Version 5—reflects the trustees’ commitment to safeguarding breed purity while ensuring resilience for future environmental and farming challenges. As the report notes, trustees are dedicated to “maintaining the breeds purity and characteristics but also ensuring that we have a breed that can cope with future agricultural and environmental issues” .

With herd sizes declining across many regions, the value of a low input, versatile native breed has become increasingly clear. The Irish Moiled continues to demonstrate its suitability for a wide range of systems and conditions, and it is encouraging to see breeders across all three constituencies preserving the breed’s defining traits while preparing it for the future.

Financial Position

The Society remains in a strong and stable financial position. Under the stewardship of the Treasurer, funds have been managed prudently and directed toward long term strategic goals and enhanced member services. The report confirms that “the Society is in a healthy financial position? and that the funds are used wisely toward future strategy and improved services for our members” .

Sales & Membership Growth

Both the Spring and Autumn online sales once again delivered excellent results. Strong prices and the addition of new members underscored the continued appeal of the breed. The Autumn sale alone attracted nearly 6,000 views, demonstrating significant public interest. However, ongoing disease concerns and import/export regulations did place some constraints on entries and sales activity.

Advocacy & Government Engagement

A delegation of breeders and directors met with the Northern Ireland Agricultural Minister to highlight the importance of including the Irish Moiled in the new Farming for Nature environmental scheme. An information booklet was produced at short notice to support this engagement, reflecting the Society’s proactive approach to policy advocacy.

Shows, Events & Member Engagement

Irish Moiled cattle were well represented across the show season, with exhibits at Balmoral, Antrim, Westmorland, the Royal Three Counties, Tullamore, and many additional events. Breeders’ Days hosted at Ballycreggy Irish Moiled (Dermot Gardiner) and Betton House (Nathalie and Christopher Chitty) were well attended and provided valuable opportunities for learning and community building.

Society volunteers also supported a range of public events, including Bunratty Castle, Stars of the Future, and the Fields Good event. The year concluded with a festive dinner in Comber, organised by Sandra and David Scott, offering a warm and enjoyable start to the holiday season.

Annual General Meeting 2025

The AGM was held online and attracted strong participation. Guest speaker PJ Budler of Global Livestock Solutions (Canada) delivered an insightful and thought provoking presentation. Leadership transitions were also marked:

• Mark Logan was thanked for his service as President

• Chris Ball was welcomed as the incoming President

• Michelle McAully stepped down as Chair

• Dan Bull assumed the role of Chairperson

The report expresses sincere appreciation for the outgoing officers’ “time and commitment in office” .

Closing Remarks

Full details of all events and activities throughout the year are available on the Society’s website. The trustees extend their thanks to all members, volunteers, and supporters whose dedication continues to strengthen and promote the Irish Moiled breed.

for the financial year ended 31 December 2025

1. General Information

Irish Moiled Cattle Society is a company limited by guarantee incorporated and registered in Northern Ireland. The registered number of the company is NI034436. The registered office of the company is 28 Lisnamany Road, Martinstown, Ballymena, Antrim, BT43 6QH, Northern Ireland. The principal activity of the company was that of the breeding, preservation and promotion of the Irish Moiled Cattle breed. The financial statements have been presented in Pound (£) which is also the functional currency of the company.

2. Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

The following accounting policies have been applied consistently in dealing with items which are considered material in relation to the company's financial statements.

Statement of compliance
The financial statements of the company for the financial year ended 31 December 2025 have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of FRS 102 Section 1A (Small Entities) and the Companies Act 2006.

Basis of preparation
The financial statements have been prepared on the going concern basis and in accordance with the historical cost convention except for certain properties and financial instruments that are measured at revalued amounts or fair values, as explained in the accounting policies below. Historical cost is generally based on the fair value of the consideration given in exchange for assets.

Turnover
Turnover comprises the invoice value of goods supplied by the company, exclusive of trade discounts and value added tax.

Tangible assets and depreciation
Tangible assets are stated at cost or at valuation, less accumulated depreciation. The charge to depreciation is calculated to write off the original cost or valuation of tangible assets, less their estimated residual value, over their expected useful lives as follows:

Plant and machinery - 15% Reducing Balance

The carrying values of tangible fixed assets are reviewed annually for impairment in periods if events or changes in circumstances indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable.

Trade and other creditors
Trade and other creditors are initially recognised at fair value and thereafter stated at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method, unless the effect of discounting would be immaterial, in which case they are stated at cost.

Taxation and deferred taxation

Current tax represents the amount expected to be paid or recovered in respect of taxable profits for the financial year and is calculated using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantially enacted at the Balance Sheet date.

Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the balance sheet date where transactions or events have occurred at that date that will result in an obligation to pay more tax in the future, or a right to pay less tax in the future. Timing differences are temporary differences between the company's taxable profits and its results as stated in the financial statements.

Deferred tax is measured on an undiscounted basis at the tax rates that are anticipated to apply in the periods in which the timing differences are expected to reverse, based on tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the Balance Sheet date.

Foreign currencies
Monetary assets and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies are translated at the rates of exchange ruling at the Balance Sheet date. Non-monetary items that are measured in terms of historical cost in a foreign currency are translated at the rates of exchange ruling at the date of the transaction. Non-monetary items that are measured at fair value in a foreign currency are translated using the exchange rates at the date when the fair value was determined. The resulting exchange differences are dealt with in the Profit and Loss Account.
