Trustees' Report
The trustees present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2026.
Objectives and Activities
Aims and Objectives
The charity’s primary objective is to recycle good quality furniture and household goods from those wishing to donate items to those in need. We operate solely within the Mid Sussex District and our clients are almost always referred to us by social services, NHS agencies, Housing Associations or similar.
We aim through our work to reduce the amount of furniture and household goods being sent to landfill thus helping meet local targets for recycling.
In setting objectives and planning for activities, the Trustees have given due consideration to general guidance published by the Charity Commission relating to public benefit, including the guidance 'Public benefit: running a charity (PB2)'.
Significant Activities
We continue to work closely with local agencies to meet the needs of those referred to us. We advertise through leaflets and occasional articles in local journals which help maintain a steady stream of donated furniture and household effects.
We continue to seek volunteers for all roles within the charity including at Trustee level.
Achievements and Performance
Main Achievements
The year saw similar levels of activity to the previous two in that there were 146 deliveries and 161 collections (2024/5 – 157 and 106 respectively). An internal valuation of the goods supplied suggested some £19.5k worth had been given to those in need.
Fundraising activities and income generation
Funding from West Sussex CC through the Local Assistance Network (LAN) remained at £8,500. During the year we received a very welcome grant of £3,000 from the Hall and Woodhouse Community Fund. In addition, we were able to invoice Mid Sussex District Council for deliveries made to rehoused persons with refugee status. During the year we raised nearly £500 from selling unwanted items at Lindfield Village Day. We have also sold a few items on eBay and sell scrap metal to a local dealer. We continued to seek modest cash donations from each household donating goods to defray the costs of collection and claim gift aid on donations where this is possible.
Financial Review
Going Concern
At the very end of the financial year, we were informed that West Sussex County Council would cease funding after 31 March 2026. Accordingly, the Trustees agreed that there was no reasonable expectation that the company would have adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the next year and a decision was taken to close the company and the charity at the end of August 2026.

Other Information
Plans for future periods
In the year to 31 March 2027, we intend to maintain our profile locally by taking a stall at Lindfield Village Day and any appropriate similar events held elsewhere in Mid Sussex District.
We will continue to ensure that the relevant agencies in Mid-Sussex are aware of our work and the services we offer either via internet or personal communications.
In the event that no significant additional funding is secured from the District Council or elsewhere the Trustees have agreed that the charity will close down by 31 August 2026.
Post end of year note. A final decision to close on 31 August 2026 was taken by the Board in May 2026 so as to allow a suitable period of time for matters to be wound up.
Post Balance Sheet Events
In the event that no significant additional funding is secured from the District Council or elsewhere the Trustees have agreed that the charity will close down by 31 August 2026.

Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities
The trustees (who are also the directors of Furnihelp Mid Sussex for the purposes of company law) are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under company law the trustees must not approve the financial statement unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that period. In preparing the financial statements the trustees are required to:
  • select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
  • observe the methods and principles in the Charity SORP;
  • make judgments and accounting estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and
  • prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the company will continue in business.
The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at anytime the financial position of the charitable company and to enable them to ensure that the accounts comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Furnihelp Mid Sussex
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31 March 2026.
Responsibilities and Basis of Report
As the charity trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law), you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 (“the 2006 Act”).
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent Examiner's Statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:
  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or
  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
  3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
  4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Notes to the Financial Statements
1. General Information
Furnihelp Mid Sussex is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated in England & Wales, registered number 07609479 and registered charity number 1143610 . The registered office is .
2. Statement of Compliance
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)", Financial Reporting Standard 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Companies Act 2006.
3. Accounting Policies
3.1. Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
The charitable company is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.
3.2. Going Concern Disclosure
The trustees have identified material uncertainties related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt about the charitable company's ability to continue as a going concern, however, the going concern basis remains appropriate.
3.3. Fund Accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds are to be used for specific purposes as laid down by the donor.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
3.4. Incoming Resources
All income is recognised once the company has entitlement to the income, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount of income receivable can be measured reliably.
Grants are included in the Statement of financial activities on a receivable basis. The balance of income received for specific purposes but not expended during the period is shown in the relevant funds on the Balance sheet. Where income is received in advance of entitlement of receipt, its recognition is deferred and included in creditors as deferred income. Where entitlement occurs before income is received, the income is accrued.
Income tax recoverable in relation to investment income is recognised at the time the investment income is receivable.
3.5. Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation
Tangible fixed assets are measured at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off the cost of the fixed assets, less their estimated residual value, over their expected useful lives on the following bases:
Motor Vehicles 25% reducing balance basis
Fixtures & Fittings 100% in year of acquisition
Computer Equipment 25% reducing balance basis
3.6. Cash and Cash Equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents are basic financial assets and include cash in hand and deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments that mature in no more than three months from the date of acquisition and are readily convertible to a known amount of cash with insignificant risk of change in value, and bank overdrafts.
Page 9
Page 10
3.7. Provisions and Contingencies
Provisions
Provisions are recognised when the charitable company has a present legal or constructive obligation as a result of past events; it is probable that an outflow of resources will be required to settle the obligation; and the amount of the obligation can be estimated reliably.
Where there are a number of similar obligations, the likelihood that an outflow will be required in settlement is determined by considering the class of obligations as a whole. A provision is recognised even if the likelihood of an outflow with respect to any one item included in the same class of obligations may be small.
Provisions are measured at the present value of the expenditures expected to be required to settle the obligation using a pre-tax rate that reflects current market assessments of the time value of money and the risks specific to the obligation. The increase in the provision due to passage of time is recognised as a finance cost.
Contingencies
Contingent liabilities are not recognised. Contingent liabilities arise as a result of past events when (i) it is not probable that there will be an outflow of resources or that the amount cannot be reliably measured at the reporting date or (ii) when the existence will be confirmed by the occurrence or non-occurrence of uncertain future events not wholly within the charitable company’s control. Contingent liabilities are disclosed in the financial statements unless the probability of an outflow of resources is remote.
Contingent assets are not recognised. Contingent assets are disclosed in the financial statements when an inflow of economic benefits is probable.
3.8. Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is classified by activity.
Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been included under expense categories that aggregate all costs for allocation to activities.
Expenditure on charitable activities is incurred on directly undertaking the activities which further the company's objectives, as well as any associated support costs.
All expenditure is inclusive of irrecoverable VAT.
