Key Achievements and Activities for 2025 Community Hikes and Events Delivered a programme of community hikes, walks and events across the year, providing welcoming and culturally relevant opportunities for Black women to access the outdoors, build confidence, improve wellbeing and connect with others. Youth and DofE Programme Expanded our youth work through partnerships with 8 youth organisations, supporting 60 plus young people. Completed 3 Duke of Edinburgh's Award Bronze expeditions, with further cohorts progressing through the programme. Activities supported young people to develop outdoor skills, confidence, resilience, teamwork and independence. Training Pathways and Leadership Continued to develop pathways for Black women to gain outdoor skills and progress into volunteering and leadership. Training opportunities supported participants and volunteers to develop practical skills and work towards recognised outdoor qualifications, helping to increase representation within outdoor leadership. Volunteer Development Strengthened our volunteer programme and created further opportunities for members of the BGH community to progress from participants into volunteering and leadership. Volunteers supported community hikes, events and wider programme delivery throughout the year. Partnerships and Collaboration Developed and delivered partnership activity with community, outdoor and environmental organisations, increasing opportunities for our community to access new spaces, experiences and skills. This included the Windrush Icons Walk in partnership with Transport for London and Go Jauntly, connecting walking with Black British history and heritage, and our first mixed-gender Peak District hike in partnership with Mandem Meet Up, bringing communities together through outdoor activity and wellbeing. Access and Inclusion Continued to reduce barriers to outdoor participation through free and subsidised opportunities, community activities, training and partnership programmes. Our work addressed barriers including cost, confidence, experience and lack of representation within outdoor spaces. Growth and Infrastructure Continued to strengthen BGH's operational infrastructure to support the growth of our programmes, volunteers, partnerships and training provision. Work during the year focused on improving coordination, programme management and developing a more sustainable model for future delivery. Impact and Achievements Summary: - Community Participation: Delivered community hikes, walks and events across the year, creating opportunities for Black women to access and build confidence in outdoor spaces. - Youth Engagement: Worked with 8 youth organisations, supporting 60 plus young people and completing 3 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expeditions. - Leadership Development: Continued to create pathways into outdoor skills, volunteering and recognised outdoor leadership qualifications. - Volunteer Development: Strengthened our volunteer network and increased opportunities for volunteers to support BGH activities and progress into leadership. - Partnerships: Developed collaborations that increased access to outdoor activity while connecting our work with wellbeing, culture, heritage and community. - Access and Representation-Continued to remove practical and cultural barriers to outdoor participation and create spaces where Black women and girls are represented and supported. - Infrastructure and Sustainability: Continued strengthening BGH's operational systems and developing sustainable approaches to programme delivery and organisational growth. BGH remains committed to increasing representation and participation in outdoor spaces. Our work supports physical and mental wellbeing, builds confidence and community, develops outdoor skills and creates pathways for Black women and girls to participate and lead in the outdoors
Our stakeholders include the women and girls who attend our activities, volunteers and walk leaders, young people and youth partners, community organisations, delivery partners, funders and organisations across the outdoor sector. In 2025, we gathered feedback through event and programme surveys, direct feedback from participants, training sessions, social media, newsletters and our community WhatsApp groups. We also maintained regular communication with our volunteers and held ongoing meetings with delivery partners and funders to review activities, identify barriers to participation and inform future programmes. In response to feedback, we continued to develop our volunteer and leadership pathways, increased opportunities for outdoor skills and training, and strengthened our youth and DofE provision. We worked with partners to provide accessible and subsidised opportunities and developed activities that responded to the interests and needs of our community. Feedback from volunteers also informed improvements to our volunteer coordination, training and support. Stakeholder feedback continues to shape our priorities and programme development, helping us ensure that our activities remain inclusive, accessible and responsive to the needs of the communities we serve.
