Business Review |
Discovery is a workforce solutions provider, partnering with organisations to attract, develop and retain the people they need to perform. Our services are delivered across two pillars: Workforce Strategy and Talent Execution, and Workforce Performance Transformation. |
What sets Discovery apart is our proven methodology, developed and refined over more than 25 years of delivery across a wide range of sectors and markets. Most providers specialise in either recruitment or development. Discovery integrates both, together with a diagnostic capability that identifies the root causes of workforce and performance challenges before solutions are designed. |
This single, structured approach connects diagnosis, workforce strategy, talent acquisition, capability development and performance improvement. Built on decades of practical experience and supported by a suite of proprietary tools, our methodology ensures that solutions are shaped by a clear understanding of each client's needs, and that the insight informing who a client hires also shapes how those people are developed, led and retained. |
This gives clients one trusted partner across the entire workforce lifecycle, and delivers more consistent and sustainable outcomes than a fragmented, multi-supplier approach. |
The year was shaped by a challenging external environment. A change of government, followed by significant and continuing shifts in employment, skills and fiscal policy, contributed to weak economic conditions across the UK. |
Business confidence was subdued throughout the period, and many clients responded by delaying or reducing their investment in recruitment and people development. |
The directors responded decisively by reshaping the business around its most valuable and sustainable activities. The most significant of these was the commercial decision to withdraw from apprenticeship delivery. |
Increasing regulatory burden, repeated changes to funding rules and high delivery costs mean that apprenticeships only generate acceptable returns when delivered at volume scale. |
Revenue for the year was in line with the directors' expectations following this planned change in business mix. The decision removed a lower-margin, high-overhead activity from the business and released capacity to focus on higher-value workforce solutions. |
The results of this strategy are clearly reflected in the company's gross margin, which increased significantly from 48.22% to 56.06%. This builds on the improvement reported in the prior year and demonstrates the effectiveness of the directors' decision to pursue only profitable, value-added business. It also reflects strong operational management, consistent delivery standards and the continued strength of our long-standing client relationships. |
During the year the company made a deliberate strategic investment in developing its presence in the United States, laying the foundations for future growth in a market where demand for integrated workforce solutions is increasing. |
These costs have been incurred ahead of the revenue they are expected to generate and, as a result, net profit for the year is lower than in the prior period. The directors view this as a planned investment in the long-term growth of the business. |
Despite the challenging conditions, the directors are pleased with the performance of the company. The business has emerged from a period of significant economic and political instability leaner, more profitable at gross margin level, and well positioned for growth. |

Principal Risks and Uncertainties |
The business operates in a competitive and evolving landscape. The directors regularly review the company's risk exposure, with specific focus on the following areas: |
- Economic and policy uncertainty: changes in government policy, taxation and employment regulation may affect client confidence and demand for our services. The decision to exit apprenticeships has reduced the company's exposure to government funding risk. |
- Cash flow and debtor risk: particularly in relation to client payment cycles. This is managed through robust credit control and regular cash flow forecasting. |
- Staffing and resource retention: ensuring we attract and retain talent aligned to our values and growth aspirations. - Innovation pressure: maintaining competitive advantage in a technology-led market, which we address through continued investment in our methodology, tools and artificial intelligence. |
Mitigating actions include robust financial controls, ongoing investment in people, and a clear focus on profitable, differentiated services that enhance resilience across different economic cycles. |
Future Outlook |
The directors are confident and excited about the future of the business, with a clear strategy for growth in both the UK and international markets. |
The UK remains the foundation of the business and a key focus for continued investment. Having repositioned the company around higher-margin workforce solutions, we are well placed to grow our UK market share as organisations look for a trusted partner to help them navigate economic uncertainty, skills shortages and changing employment legislation. |
Our pipeline remains healthy, supported by deep, long-standing client relationships and a strong reputation for quality and innovation. We will continue to invest in our UK team, our service offering and our delivery capability, while maintaining the commercial discipline that has driven the improvement in margin. |
Alongside this, the United States represents a significant and exciting additional growth opportunity. American organisations are actively seeking sustainable, evidence-based solutions to their workforce challenges, and our integrated methodology is exceptionally well suited to meet that demand. |
Success in the US will also strengthen the group as a whole, broadening our client base and reinforcing the value of the expertise developed in the UK. |
Building on the strong UK platform and the foundations laid in the US during the year, the directors expect a significant uplift in performance during the next financial year. |
We continue to invest in the ongoing development of our methodology, drawing on research, client feedback and the experience gained from every engagement. |
This continuous refinement keeps our approach relevant to changing client needs and enables organisations to make better-informed decisions at every stage of the workforce lifecycle, from initial diagnosis through to recruitment, development and change. |
