The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Turnover
Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, excluding discounts, rebates, value added tax and other sales taxes.

Tangible fixed assets
Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.

Tangible Fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation, net of depreciation and any impairment loss.

The gain or loss arising on the disposal of an asset is determined as the difference between the sale proceeds and the carrying value of the asset, and is credited or charged to the profit or loss.

Financial instruments
The company enters into derivative financial instruments, principally exchange-traded equity and index options, as part of its investment activities.

Derivative financial instruments are initially recognised at fair value and are subsequently measured at fair value at each reporting date. Changes in fair value, including gains and losses arising on settlement, are recognised in profit or loss in the period in which they arise.

Derivative financial assets and derivative financial liabilities are presented separately where appropriate. Fair value is determined by reference to quoted market prices or other market information provided by the company’s investment broker at the reporting date.

Taxation
Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Income Statement, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity.

Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits.

Listed investments
Investments in listed shares are recognised initially at transaction price and are subsequently measured at fair value at each reporting date. Fair value is determined by reference to quoted market prices at the reporting date.

Changes in the fair value of listed investments are recognised in profit or loss in the period in which they arise.
