The company runs Artisan (Chagford) CIC, which is a shop to support a local artisanal makers in Devon and the southwest. Chagford is a small rural town in Devon with a population of 1500. The company took over the business in 2023 to maintain an outlet for local makers, support local employment and volunteering, and to support local art classes. Our stakeholders are artists and makers in Devon and the southwest, and the local community in Chagford. In the financial year Jan – December 2025 we have benefitted the community in the following ways: Provided an outlet for 149 local artists and makers to sell their work – our commission is kept low to enable all makers to use the space, with reduced commission for under 25’s. Promoted 10 ‘featured artists’ exhibitions to boost sales of specially selected makers. Provided a website where makers can showcase their work with a short description and photographs, with links to their social media accounts (www.artisanmakers.store). Provided opportunities for makers with long-term conditions and disabilities to show their work. Showcased three local musicians and their work in the shop. Provided regular part-time employment for 7 local people, including three young people 16 years - 25 years. Acted as a hub for regular volunteering opportunities, with 16 regular local volunteers, including 12 local makers. Supported local charities, including a workshop for the Chagford Hospitality Network and supporting the Whiddon Down Music Festival. Organised two five week terms of art classes, with subsidised places for those on low incomes. Provided free advertising space for local artists, charities and events. As part of the Chagford Business Community we have helped to improve the attractiveness of the town to tourists and visitors, which helps other small businesses and pubs in the town.
Our stakeholders are artists and makers in Devon and the southwest, and the local community in Chagford. One director writes to makers who have made sales every month, which provides a regular opportunity for feedback from the makers. We held a social meeting for volunteers and selected makers in September 2025 and organised a small group discussion to consider what was working well and ideas for improvement for the shop. We conducted an e-mail survey of 55 makers in March 26 to obtain their views of the shop and asked specifically for ideas for improvement. We receive informal feedback from visitors to the shop, which is uniformly positive. Many say they particularly value having a shop that showcases local artists and makers. Formal feedback from makers included the following comments: you run a lovely gallery with lots of choice and a high standard. Something for everybody. it is maker-friendly as well as customer-friendly. You have been wonderfully smooth to deal with. I really value the work of my fellow craftspeople and artists and am proud to be in their company. Encouraging and supportive to new artists taking the plunge. Great variety of beautiful products on offer. Friendly, familiar volunteer shopkeepers - lovely to call in for a chat. We have undertaken the following actions in response to suggestions from makers: Employed one of the young makers to improve the shop display and to improve information about makers in the shop. Increased our social media output. Featured the shop in Dartmoor Life magazine. Worked with one of the makers to improve the website and added a featured artists section. Decluttered to improve the overall appearance of the shop. Provided the volunteers with information about individual makers (written folder and on the website), and a volunteer handbook for running the shop. Include all the volunteers in a WhatsApp group to share information and queries and arranged another social meeting to discuss promotion of the shop.
