The trustees, who are also the directors of the company, present their annual report together with the financial statements of Richmond Mencap Limited (the charity or the company) for the year ended 31 March 2026.
The financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, as amended by the Charities Act 2022, the Companies Act 2006, the company's Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association, and the Accounting and Reporting by Charities Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
The trustees confirm that due regard has been paid to the Charity Commission's public benefit guidance in the decision-making processes of the charity.
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
The main objectives are described below and are provided for people with learning disabilities in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, their families and carers and are undertaken to further the company's charitable purposes for the public benefit:
* to provide, procure or facilitate welfare, educational, leisure, holiday and respite services and support;
* to advance equality and diversity for people with learning disabilities;
* to inform, represent, promote and advance their rights, needs, interests and well-being;
* to support them in securing services and support, commensurate with individual and family needs and to enable them to maximise their potential;
* to feedback via the working together group and by attending relevant forums on what services and support are available in the borough of Richmond for people with learning disabilities;
* to participate in, and contribute to, the development of services through the planning and consultation process.
Significant activities
During the year, the charity recruited five additional trustees.
Some of our key achievements in the year were:
* The charity's Working Together Group worked closely on Richmond Council's Friendly Parks for All project, which included overseeing Cambridge Gardens, and on the Care Quality Commission's assessment of the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames's social care responsibilities covering important topics for the learning disability community.
* The nurses training this year has continued successfully and we have managed to get an increase of nurses, paramedics and other healthcare professionals to attend. Our spring nurses training was in collaboration with National Mencap around a media campaign highlighting the experience of people with learning disabilities within the NHS.
* The charity's partnership with St Mary's University in Twickenham has continued to grow, including a research study with the learning disability team within the university's Department of Psychology. We hosted a research focus group, which was designed to understand the experience of holidays for people with learning disabilities and the risks or inclusive factors associated with them.
New activities included:
* Gym with Paula was run weekly using the facilities and exercise equipment at the Cambrian Community Centre in Richmond and directed by a professional trainer.
* The Enable Workshop at the Etna Community Centre provided beneficiaries with access to facilitators such as a nutritionist and a physical activity specialist to deliver healthy eating and exercise adapted to suit all abilities.
* Exotic Cooking, aimed at introducing new diets and cuisines and teaching cooking skills to participants to use independently or with support at home.
* Coffee with Ron, offers a sign posting service to support people with disabilities and/or their families. It provides information about local support in an informal setting.
The charity continued to run:
* Something to Say, a local performing arts group for young adults with different learning abilities, inspired by themes and issues that affect our own lives.
* The Music and More group, which has clearly become an integral part of the attendees' lives. There has been increased use of technology, which has developed new skills.
* The Meeting Place, weekly evening drop-in sessions for those living independently or in supported living. These sessions help to reduce isolation and provide the opportunity to stay connected with friends.
* The direction of our Children and Young People group has gone more towards nature, taking children to more outdoor focused activities, such as archery and an obstacle course at Walton Firs, Kew Gardens, Barnes Wetland Centre and The Lookout Centre in Bracknell Forest,
* We provided information/advice and signposting to other services to people with learning disabilities (including those with social communication conditions, ADHD, Autism and other additional needs), their families, carers and other professionals through our newsletters and our website, reaching out to over 1,000 people across the borough of Richmond, who care about learning disabilities.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
for the Year Ended 31 March 2026
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Financial results
The total income for the year was £124,849 (2024/25: £153,854, which included £50,499 on the sale of an investment property) and total expenditure was £198,513 (2024/25: £191,486), resulting in a deficit of £73,664 (2024/25: £37,632), which was met from unrestricted reserves.
The total funds of the charity as at 31 March 2026 were £160,337 (2024/25: £234,001), which included the restricted reserve of £99,409 (2024/25: £100,000) derived from the Elsie Kirk Trust grant.
The Elsie Kirk Trust grant of £I00,000 has always been highly restrictive, originally to be used only for the office accommodation of Richmond Mencap. In a meeting on 1 December 2025, we were formally advised by the representative of the donor that the funds should be used for holidays and trips outside the charity's regular activities as well as for special events and celebratory activities. By 31 March 2026, the expenditure on such activities totalled £591, which reduced the reserve to £99,409.
We are very grateful for the continued support of our regular funders, including the Richmond Foundation, Hampton Fund and Richmond Council.
Approved by order of the board of trustees on
