It had been programmed that 2025 would see the construction of the site’s Visitor Centre & Learning Hub, to be funded by West Lancashire Borough Council from its Community Infrastructure Levy as the Council’s contribution to this important com-munity project. Unfortunately, the award of funding was delayed. This had several serious impacts. Planned activities such as those funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund were delayed until later in the year. Volunteer resources were redeployed to construct a small Welcome Centre building with a shop and toilets. These actions enabled the important milestone of opening the site for visitors to be successfully achieved. The board is grateful for the support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Key Fund which enabled this to happen. The principal activities during 2025 have been Engagement activities including volunteer recruitment, guided tours of the site and establishing the Friends organisation. The provision of a range of heritage events and educational activities. The continuation of physical works to bring the site into sound stewardship. These included improvements to paths and other infrastructure and a start being made on re-storing some of the site’s heritage features. Continuing work with funders such as the Council and other organisations supporting community initiatives, educational, environmental and conservation work. Continuing work with partners in the education and heritage sectors. The project has had significant social impact during 2025 through volunteering, Friends activities, educational work and for all visitors. Feedback from audiences has been very positive.
There has been regular liaison with our local partner organisations. We have also made presentations to local community groups.
