Over the last year we further grew our reach and impact using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) to change young people’s lives. We achieve this by running accessible, affordable BJJ programmes that improve young people’s physical health, mental health and employability. Key activities and achievements include: -Working with over 400 young people across Bristol and London -Over 90% of young people improving their physical and mental wellbeing having taken part in our sessions based on those surveyed, and over 80% improving their confidence -Establishing 5 regular schools programmes across Bristol and London, one of few organisations nationwide offering BJJ classes in schools -Running 3 regular open-access youth and young adults BJJ provisions with over 100 participants across Bristol and London -Building a team of 15 youth-experienced BJJ coaches, all of whom are DBS-checked, first aid and safeguarding trained and act as positive role models for young people -Offered 4 young people and 4 young BJJ coaches paid work experience with us, improving employability for all of them -Growing partnerships with key national and regional stakeholders including funders (e.g. Sport England, UnLtd, Greenwood Capital), schools (e.g. St Mary Redcliffe Temple School, the largest secondary school in Bristol) and community organisations (e.g. The Park Centre and Full Circle Project in Bristol) Across these activities we have supported hundreds of young people – the vast majority from some kind of disadvantage – to access BJJ for the first time and improve their wellbeing, confidence and focus. In doing so we have become the UK’s leading social enterprise using BJJ for social impact, and look forward to growing our impact over the coming year.
RISE's key stakeholders include the young people participating in our programmes, their parents and carers, our delivery partners (including schools, youth organisations and community centres), our coaches and volunteers, our funders and supporters, and the wider communities in which we operate. We maintain regular communication with stakeholders through day-to-day engagement at our sessions, conversations and surveys with young people and their parents or carers, and ongoing discussions with our delivery partners. We also seek feedback from schools (e.g. Haberdashers Hatcham’s schools in London, St Mary Redcliffe Temple School in Bristol) and youth organisations (e.g. Full Circle Youth Project in St Pauls) to understand the needs of the young people they support and to ensure that our programmes remain relevant, accessible and effective. Feedback from young people and delivery partners plays an important role in shaping our activities. In particular, we have continued to develop our programmes in response to the needs of local communities, with an emphasis on providing free or subsidised places, creating inclusive and welcoming environments, and offering sessions that are accessible to young people with limited previous experience of sport. We have also developed opportunities for young people to take on paid work experience through our ‘Peer Support Worker’ role, reflecting our commitment to involving participants in the wider development and delivery of our programmes. We recognise that ongoing consultation is essential to ensuring that our activities continue to meet the needs of the communities we serve. We therefore aim to maintain regular dialogue with our stakeholders and use their feedback to inform the development of our programmes, partnerships and wider organisational strategy.
Director Thomas Hague has been remunerated for services provided to RISE through People Plus Places Ltd – across this financial year this amount totalled £8,892.50.
