During the financial year, Freshefied CIC operated at a reduced level of activity while taking a period of pause and reflection. However, we continued to support Black students in Scotland where possible through practical advice, information and signposting. This included supporting students beginning university by providing guidance and information to help them navigate university life, as well as signposting students to relevant opportunities and scholarships. Particular support was provided to international and postgraduate students, who can face additional financial and practical barriers when accessing higher education. These activities benefited the community by improving access to useful information and opportunities, reducing some of the financial pressure faced by students, and providing practical support to help students feel more secure and supported during their studies.
Freshefied CIC’s main stakeholders are Black students in Scotland, including undergraduate, postgraduate and international students. During the year, we remained in contact with students through direct conversations and messages, where students shared questions, concerns and areas in which they needed support. This included conversations around adjusting to university life, financial pressures, access to scholarships and other opportunities, and practical support. Feedback and requests from students informed the support we provided, including sharing relevant information and opportunities, signposting students to scholarships and resources, and providing food support over the Christmas and New Year period. As the company operated at a reduced level during the year, consultation was primarily informal and ongoing rather than through formal surveys or consultation events.
