PHYSIOTHERAPISTS IN NEUROLOGY (REGISTERED NUMBER: 10898963)

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2025

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31st December 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Primary objectives
The company's objectives are to preserve and protect good health for public benefit within areas of neurology or physiotherapy or cognate health-related fields (including neuro-physiotherapy, neurosciences, neuro-technology, neurosurgery, neuro-rehabilitation and adjacent subdisciplines). These objectives will be advanced through education, training, scholarship, research, knowledge-creation, dissemination and exchange, leadership, continuing development and overall practice excellence and achievement. It will also foster dialogue on related health and social care policy and professionalism.

We review our aims, objectives and business strategy annually, taking into account available resources.

Our main objectives during 2025 were to:
- Increase our external presence and public profile
- Launch a new, more accessible website
- Continue embedding the ACPIN office into the day-to-day running requirements of ACPIN
- Strengthen governance in line with Charity Commission guidance, including completion of the risk register and a financial review of the charity
- Continue to extend and build upon current provision of CPD training through a diverse range of training courses
- Review and revise the Hub Endorsement Policy to ensure consistency across ACPIN's regional hubs
- Continue to collaborate with other charitable and professional organisations
- Systematically explore ways in which we can engage with the public more effectively, including through patient and public involvement (PPIE)

Public benefit
The Board has paid due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit. ACPIN remains committed to fostering, for the public benefit, the highest standard of education and learning resources for all. This in turn enables the delivery of the best possible care for members of the public and their patients, ensuring they remain up to date with the latest developments and innovations in this area of physiotherapy. ACPIN recognises the positive effect that high-quality, life-long training can have for all.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
ACPIN's Board consists of 6 portfolio holders, including the Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer, all of whom have a responsibility to grow and develop their areas for the benefit of the public including ACPIN and its members.

A summary of the collective achievements of the Board up until 31st December 2025 is provided below:

- Membership: Membership currently stands at 3293 members (+ 23 vs 2024). Cancellations during the year totalled n=699, and the Board continued to monitor retention closely following the elevated cancellations reported in 2024.

- Data Protection: Full compliance with GDPR regulations maintained, ensuring that no mailing lists are shared with external parties.

- Distribution of a weekly newsletter to members, continuing to include clinical and practice-related consultations, research calls, and patient and public involvement success stories, directly linking people living with a neurological condition with neurological physiotherapists.

- Increasing the availability of the best evidence for treatment: the redeveloped website went live, featuring dedicated open-access resources for the public. The resources working group, with active patient and public involvement contribution, continued to expand the compendium of web-based e-learning courses and materials. ACPIN collaborated with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) to survey Neurological physiotherapy teams within the UK asking them to feedback on whether they met the UK Stroke Guidelines standards, particularly on staffing. We have also started a new collaboration, reviewing the splinting guidelines, with the specialist neurological section of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.

- Reviewing educational opportunities: the Education Working Group continued to structure CPD requirements for members and signpost relevant courses. The "What is a neurophysiotherapist" project and the clinical handling skills course exploration both progressed further in 2025.

- Engaging with members of the public: continued collaboration with the Neurological Alliance, and progression of joint working discussions with 3 Million Steps.

- Working with other charitable organisations: ongoing collaboration with the Neurological Alliance, and continued exploratory discussions with the British Polio Foundation, the Stroke Association and PD UK.

- Harmonising CPD delivery: all hubs continued to deliver 4 CPD opportunities per hub per year (excluding CPD events organised by the National Executive Board). Collaboration with the Danish Neurological Society continued, and ACPIN delivered its International Conference in collaboration with the Dutch, Belgian and German Neurological Societies in Maastricht in 2025, with a strong focus on clinical relevance for people living with a neurological condition. Planning commenced for the 2026 ACPIN International Conference.

- Delivering high-quality evidence-based information to improve treatment options for patients and the public:

- Delivery of quarterly journal clubs to increase physiotherapists' ability to critique treatment choices and deliver evidence-based care
- Delivery of a well-supported in person and virtual study day in 2025 and continued virtual professional development courses at nominal costs to members
- Continued work on FES guideline awareness for commissioners, supported by MSc student projects

- Publicity: continued media exposure through charitable organisations such as the Neurological Alliance and professional bodies such as the CSP, including further collaboration with the CSP on patient-relevant Rehab Works content.

- Governance: the Board completed a financial review of the charity, revised the Hub Endorsement Policy to strengthen consistency. The Board also commenced work on developing a quality assurance for CSP policy which have been shared with the hubs for their input.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2025

- The Board continued to navigate a challenging external environment during 2025, including ongoing cost-of-living pressures affecting members and the wider health and social care sector. Despite these constraints, the charity continued to progress its work plans and remained responsive to enquiries from people living with neurological conditions.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Financial position
The Charity relies on funds generated through membership subscriptions as well as surplus funds received from conferences and courses.

The Board continues to actively pursue potential fundraising activities to augment existing reserves.

Principal funding sources
The principal funding source for ACPIN remains its membership.

Reserves policy
Our policy is to maintain reserves at a level sufficient to support management, administration and support costs, equivalent to approximately 6 months / £49,585 of unrestricted expenditure. Any surplus funds are reinvested in the Charity and earmarked for specific projects.

FUTURE PLANS
ACPIN's plans for the coming financial year (2026) are:

Patient and public involvement

Building on progress made during 2025, ACPIN will continue to embed PPIE as a cornerstone of its work, deepening relationships with charity partners and people living with neurological conditions who wish to participate.

Fundraising
- Continue to explore governmental grants and funding opportunities that promote ACPIN's objects, supported by a clearly articulated shared purpose.
- Continue to investigate collaborative opportunities with wider public health benefit, including with the Motor Neurone Disease Association, the Neurological Alliance, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the British Polio Foundation and the Stroke Association.

Governance
- Finalise and formally adopt the Risk Register/risk rating tool.
- Continue to develop the conference programme for 2026 to ensure it is accessible to PPIE members.
- Progress trustee recruitment in line with the trustee roles, responsibilities and recruitment guideline approved by the Board.

Education
- Enhance educational opportunities for the benefit of all through publications and e-learning materials, and continue to expand open-access online learning offerings.
- Finalise grant-giving criteria to ensure ACPIN supports research or projects with the greatest patient benefit.
- Plan the ACPIN face-to-face conference for 2026, with PPIE embedded through each aspect of the conference.
- Use the ACPIN conference as a platform to continue the engagement process with members of the public.
- Seek collaboration and engage with the public to maximise co-design opportunities for public benefit.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The charity is controlled by its governing document the Memorandum and Articles of Association, dated 18th September 2018.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Reference and administrative details
ACPIN is a registered company in England and Wales - number 10898963 and a Registered Charity - number 1180086

Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
The Board recognises the importance of continually improving the governance structure in line with Charity Commission guidance. The trustee roles, responsibilities and recruitment guideline approved by the Board in the prior year continued to inform recruitment activity during 2025. The Board continued to draw on the experience of the Neurological Alliance and other partner charities in shaping its trustee recruitment approach.

Organisational structure
The ACPIN charity is made up of a Board of Directors, which is accountable to the ACPIN Council. The ACPIN Council also includes hub council members. Collectively, the Council holds the Board responsible for the delivery of its charitable objectives. The ACPIN Board meets monthly, and the ACPIN Council meets quarterly per year. The Chair has ultimate responsibility to ensure that the charity acts in accordance with its charitable objectives, as set out in Article 2 of the Articles of Association.

Risk management
The Board regularly reviews the major risks to which the charity is exposed. During 2025 the Board completed a financial review of the charity and revised its Hub Endorsement Policy, strengthening consistency and accountability across ACPIN's regional hubs. Policy documents remain under continuous review, with new documents drafted and ratified to augment those already in place, and existing policies subject to a strict annual review process.

As a small charity, ACPIN remains highly dependent on the willingness of the ACPIN Board, who are entirely volunteers, to invest considerable amounts of personal, unpaid time, supported by a small number of highly dedicated part-time staff. The Board recognises a clear risk to the charity should it lose key individuals who cannot easily be replaced. The Board continues to review its operational performance and capacity to ensure the correct skill mix and availability to deliver its objectives, and continues to seek collaboration with other charities and organisations on shared projects to offset volunteer workload.

STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES' RESPONSIBILITIES

The trustees (who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of company law) are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice, including FRS 102 and the Charities SORP where applicable. Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of its incoming resources and application of resources for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently, make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent, and prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume the charity will continue in operation. The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records, for safeguarding the assets of the charity, and for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
