The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 April 2026. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
The relief of sickness and the preservation and protection of good physical and mental health of babies and children in healthcare or hospital settings, in particular (but without limitation) through bedside companionship and emotional support services designed to prevent and reduce isolation, distress, and emotional abandonment during hospital stays.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
The financial year ending 30 April 2026 marked a significant milestone in the organisation's history. Following our formal transition to Ward Buddies - a clinically governed bedside emotional support service for hospitalised babies and children - this year represented our first full 12-month operating period delivering structured, trauma-informed companionship directly on the wards of Birmingham Children's Hospital.
Building on our initial £66,437 seed investment in early 2025, we established a robust proof-of-concept that we are confident can be carefully phased into paediatric units nationwide.
Words and numbers can only tell part of the story.
Our short documentary follows the founder's journey - from his own childhood days alone in hospital, to the wards of Birmingham Children's Hospital where Ward Buddies is changing what those days look like for children today. We encourage you to watch it before reading on - and stay until the end.
Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inqTnH5v8nk&t=45s
To hear more about the work itself, Jamie also spoke with BBC Radio 4's Café Hope - focusing on what Ward Buddies does on the ground, the children it serves, and why this work matters now.

SERVICE DELIVERY AND IMPACT
Direct Bedside Support
During our first full year of operations, Ward Buddies provided dedicated bedside companionship to 142 babies and young children during prolonged hospital stays. These are some of the most vulnerable children in the country - too young to understand why their parents aren't there, and too small to ask for help.
Without Ward Buddies, they would face those hours alone. Our trained volunteers and clinical team step in to ensure that doesn't happen - providing a consistent, warm, and safe presence that prevents the emotional abandonment that can cause lasting harm.
Wider Reach - Education and Cultural Change
Beyond our direct bedside work, Ward Buddies is changing the culture of the wards we operate on. By being present for a child, we free parents to return home to other children, to rest, to work - knowing their baby is not alone. Throughout the year, our team worked alongside hundreds of parents, carers, and nursing staff - encouraging rooming-in, strengthening attachment, and helping families understand the importance of remaining present wherever their circumstances allow. Every child we support represents a whole family held. It is not easily captured in a single number, but its impact is real, and it is growing.
Public Awareness and Advocacy
The story of Ward Buddies has resonated far beyond the wards of Birmingham Children's Hospital. Our launch was covered by national media, including the BBC - recognising that this is not just a local issue, but a national one.
Ward Buddies (Registered number: 08999877)
Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 30 April 2026
At the heart of that story is our founder - a world record-breaking adventurer, Pride of Britain Award winner, who has cycled the globe and run across Canada. But behind those achievements is something more personal - a childhood spent in and out of hospital, and the discovery, years later, of what those lonely days had really cost him. Ward Buddies exists because of that discovery.
Our short documentary threads those two worlds together. It has since been viewed hundreds of thousands of times, sparking conversations about childhood emotional isolation that simply weren't happening before. Every view is another step toward a future where no child faces those days alone.
Clinical and Peer Delivery Model
Ward Buddies operates as a fully integrated service within Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital, delivered in partnership with their Health in Mind psychological team. Our staffing model comprises:
- Lead Clinical/Assistant Psychologist — responsible for clinical oversight, psychological risk identification, and safe referral pathways.
- Peer Support Worker with lived experience — providing authentic connection and practical guidance to families navigating long and difficult hospital stays.
- Project Manager and a cohort of 25 trained volunteers — each completing a rigorous induction including DBS checks, safeguarding training, and supervised clinical preparation before working directly with children.
This model ensures that every aspect of our service operates within a safe, professionally overseen clinical framework — a standard central to our approach as we look toward phased growth into other hospitals.
Targeted Ward Presence
Our active operations focused on the wards identified as carrying the greatest risk of attachment disruption and emotional harm through prolonged separation:
- Neonatal Surgical Ward — supporting infants and families during high-stress early surgical interventions.
- Cardiac Wards — providing consistent bedside presence for babies and young children undergoing complex cardiac treatment.
- Complex Care Ward — supporting children with lifelong conditions facing extended hospital stays.
RESEARCH, EVALUATION, AND EVIDENCE
The Trustees recognise that sustainable growth and responsible phased expansion depend on a robust, evidence-based case for the Ward Buddies model. During this financial year we made meaningful progress in that area:
Ward Buddies (Registered number: 08999877)
Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 30 April 2026
- Trauma-Informed Staff Training — delivered specialised awareness sessions to hospital staff, resulting in a measurable increase in early referrals for children identified as being at risk of emotional distress.
- Evidence-Based Evaluation — collaborated with Health in Mind to monitor pre- and post-intervention indicators, capturing qualitative and quantitative data across patient wellbeing, parent resilience, and ward culture.
This evidence base will underpin future funding applications and our phased expansion strategy.
STRATEGIC OUTLOOK
Having established a clinically governed, operationally sound proof-of-concept at Birmingham Children's Hospital, the organisation's strategic priorities for 2026 and beyond are as follows:
- Financial Sustainability — securing ongoing annual funding of £70,000 or more to permanently embed the Ward Buddies service within Birmingham Children's Hospital on a long-term basis.
- Phased National Expansion — refining our operational toolkit, volunteer training framework, and evaluation methodology so that the Ward Buddies model can be thoughtfully introduced to paediatric units across the United Kingdom, one hospital at a time.
- Innovation and Systemic Change — Beyond direct service delivery, the founder is developing an innovation designed to systemise the delivery of emotionally supportive care specifically for the most vulnerable babies in neonatal settings, ensuring consistency, quality, and scalability as Ward Buddies grows. A patent application has been submitted in relation to this development. Whilst being funded and developed independently of Ward Buddies, the Trustees believe it has the potential to transform how emotional care is delivered at scale across neonatal units nationwide. In the longer term, a proven and systemised model of this kind opens the door to NHS commissioning and trust-level funding - creating a path toward sustainable, self-sufficient delivery that reduces reliance on charitable grant funding over time. The Trustees will provide further updates as this development progresses.
THE NEONATAL SPACE - WHERE WE ARE HEADING NEXT
Ward Buddies currently supports young children across Birmingham Children's Hospital. But as we look ahead, our focus is turning to the most vulnerable group of all - newborn babies in neonatal care.
Neonatal care does incredible things. And the NHS, under enormous pressure, does its very best to keep families together. But the reality of modern life means that even the most devoted parent often can't be there for more than a few hours a day. Some days, they can't be there at all. Other children at home to look after. Jobs that can't wait. Travel costs that stack up. Sheer exhaustion. After a parent leaves, their baby lies in an incubator - and there is nobody whose job it is to simply be there with them. Nurses are caring for multiple critically ill babies at once, having to focus on the medical side.
The human presence a baby needs, and deserves, falls through the gap.
Ward Buddies (Registered number: 08999877)
Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 30 April 2026
What Ward Buddies proposes to do in the neonatal space goes beyond filling that gap. They say it takes a village to raise a child - and perhaps nowhere is that more true than in a neonatal unit, where the most fragile lives are beginning, and where parents cannot always be the village on their own. Our vision is for trained staff and emotionally attuned volunteers to be present throughout the day - not just for one visit, but consistently, responding to each baby's cues, as if they were at home in their mother's arms - providing the kind of continuous emotional connection that research shows accelerates recovery. Not replacing parents. Sitting alongside them. And being there for every hour they can't be.
Research shows that consistent emotional contact and skin-to-skin presence reduces a baby's hospital stay by up to two and a half days. A single neonatal bed costs the NHS over £800 a day. Across the 90,000 babies admitted to neonatal units every year, even a modest reduction in average length of stay would represent a saving of tens of millions of pounds annually - whilst giving thousands of babies the chance to go home sooner, and giving thousands of families the chance to start healing together, with one less baby carrying the weight of emotional abandonment into their future. That's what Ward Buddies is working toward.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Trustees wish to record their sincere gratitude to our NHS clinical partners at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust, our dedicated Ward Buddies staff team, our volunteer cohort, our Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity partnership, and every donor, grant maker, and fundraiser whose generosity has made this work possible.
During this financial year, hundreds of children experienced consistent warmth, connection, and emotional safety during their most vulnerable moments in hospital. The Trustees are deeply proud of what has been achieved - and resolute in their commitment to ensuring no child faces those moments alone.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
The statement of financial activities on page 6 show the incoming resources and the application of those resources for Ward Buddies. The key factors are as follows:
During the year ended 30 April 2026, Ward Buddies again managed to maintain its fund-raising activities and was able to raise £13,337 for their chosen causes. In addition they secured donations of £9,114 to enable them to cover the annual running costs of the charity and maintain the free reserves at £84,855.
It is the policy of the charity to maintain free reserves, at a level that equates to between three and twelve months of the unrestricted resources expended. This would provide a cushion against fluctuations in the income and would enable the charity to continue with its current operating and charitable activities. As at 30 April 2026 the reserves of £84,855 were well within this reserves policy.
A note on restricted fund history
Several restricted funds shown in these accounts - including Archie's Chance to Dance, Amelia's Dream to Walk, Charlie's Voice, Nicola, Dylan, Lincoln's Legs, and Olivia's Dream to Walk - were established under the charity's former name, Superhero Foundation, to support named individuals and their families with treatments not routinely provided by statutory authorities. These funds are entirely separate from Ward Buddies, and are held in accordance with original donor intent, and will be wound down as remaining funds are applied to their intended purposes.
Post Year End Commitment - Ward Buddies Year 2
Subsequent to the year end, the Trustees formally committed to funding the second year of the Ward Buddies programme at Birmingham Children's Hospital. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 12 July 2026 with Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital Charity (Charity No. 1160875), under which Ward Buddies - as the programme's founding and lead partner - will invest £57,000 over 14 months (July 2026 to August 2027), payable in quarterly instalments of £14,250 from September 2026. This investment will fund the salary costs of a dedicated project manager and assistant psychologist, and project consumables, ring-fenced in a restricted fund held by BWCHC solely for this purpose.
This commitment reflects the Trustees' determination to ensure continuity of a service that babies and children in hospital are depending on every day. The Trustees wish to be transparent about the financial implications. The £57,000 programme investment will be drawn from unrestricted reserves, which stood at £84,855 at the year end. This will leave the charity with significantly reduced financial headroom beyond the current programme year - and securing grant funding is now an urgent priority to ensure Ward Buddies can continue and grow beyond August 2027.
The Trustees consider this the right use of reserves - but are clear-eyed that the charity's next phase depends on external funding support. A number of significant applications are actively in progress and the Trustees remain confident in the long-term viability and national potential of the model.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
The charity was established in April 2014 as Superhero Foundation, a company limited by guarantee registered in England with the Charity Commission. During this financial year the charity changed its name to Ward Buddies, reflecting its evolution into a direct delivery service and its role as the founding and lead partner of the Ward Buddies programme at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
Our governing document is our Memorandum and Articles of Association. In the event of Ward Buddies being wound up our liability as Trustees is limited to a sum not exceeding £1. As existing Trustees, we elect new Trustees in accordance with the Articles of Association. As Trustees we meet as a Board a minimum of four times a year to set strategy and monitor performance.
The day-to-day management is carried out on a voluntary basis by Jamie McDonald. Jamie is reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses.
All other Trustees give their time freely and no remuneration or expenses were paid to them during the year.
