North Shields Rugby Football Club Community Interest Company provides the facility to play, volunteer and support community grassroots rugby in North Tyneside. The Club originated as Smiths Dock RFC in 1922 and has, since its origin, been a place devoted to inclusive sport and recreation. The Club’s emphasis remains on ensuring that all players, volunteers and members, regardless of age, disability, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ability or socio economic background, have a safe and welcoming place to play rugby, engage in community volunteering or simply enjoy the company of others in a warm and safe environment. During the company year October 2024 to October 2025, the Club placed particular emphasis on widening inclusivity and encouraging non traditional members into the rugby community. Club activities have benefited the community in the following ways: Based upon Rugby Football Union RFU approved methodology, the Club has delivered over 1 million pounds in social value to the community during the financial year. Excluding charitable value, this is the equivalent of 7527 pounds per active member per annum. The social value breakdown included coaches, directors, committee members, maintenance volunteers, active youth players and active senior players. The report records a total social value of 1129050 pounds, excluding the Club’s charitable and community value. On average, volunteers give up the equivalent cash value of 80000 pounds per annum in community support at the Club, based upon ONS recommended rates. Community work has resulted in a significant number of women attending sessions at the Club, resulting in the formation of a female team. The Club has provided full time or part time employment for 13 local residents. Approximately 66 percent of members live in the lowest 3 IMD deciles nationally. The Club has continued to develop and deliver a strategy to help alleviate the financial pressures many members face by ensuring players and volunteers receive a free hot meal after games. This investment has helped the Club ensure equity of service and provided approximately 1200 free hot meals to players and volunteers. In addition to senior players and members, the Club has actively supported the growth of the Youth Section. Many members of the Youth Section live in areas of higher than average deprivation based upon IMD analysis. To ensure these young people have equity of opportunity, the Club has provided free hot snacks after Sunday sessions, resulting in approximately 700 free meals being provided to junior players and volunteers. The Club has created a kit bank for those with no kit or inappropriate kit and encouraged parents to donate used kit which has been distributed to those in greatest need. The Club has continued to recruit and train volunteers to support and deliver its youth rugby provision. These volunteers provided approximately 1800 hours of community voluntary work, which has engaged and retained over 40 young people in rugby. The Club also ran a grassroots work experience week for teenagers not in mainstream school. This resulted in 12 young people gaining real life work experience and the opportunity to meet potential employers.
The Club’s stakeholders are members, including rugby players, volunteers and social members. During the year October 2024 to October 2025: The Club has successfully progressed towards the member vision of being a community venue. The Club’s Walking Rugby provision has grown. This provision was developed following consultation with retired members and stakeholders. The aim is to provide a community activity suitable for members who can no longer partake in physical activity. Sessions run weekly during the season and are free to attend. As a result of member consultation, the Club is actively seeking to improve its facilities to better reflect the community. Progress has included new community focused images at the entrance, new facilities for women including free sanitary products, and free meals for older members.
