COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

OAKLEIGH COMMUNITY CIC

Company Number: 16678038 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 August 2026

Company activities and impact

We exist to strengthen the financial sustainability of charities, community groups and social enterprises, and to open inclusive routes into finance careers for people facing barriers, including neurodivergent people and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. In our first period, to 31 August 2026, the company provided accountancy, bookkeeping, payroll and financial management support to around 186 clients across Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Around 41 of these are charities, CICs and community organisations, many of them small, volunteer-led groups with no in-house finance staff. Eight not-for-profit organisations received our services at reduced rates, and two received them free of charge. Our support helps these organisations stay compliant, understand their finances and spend more of their time on their communities. In one case, a local charity recovered a £1,500 VAT overpayment. A community men's health group told us that its funding bids now succeed because its finances are in order. The company employed an average of four people during the period and invested over £2,200 in staff training. Oakleigh is a Disability Confident employer. Between June and August 2026 it hosted a funded internship through the University of Sheffield, giving a student practical, supervised experience of finance work. In July 2026 it also hosted a secondary school student for a week's work experience, introducing them to careers in accountancy and finance. Staff also gained QuickBooks Online certification. During the period we started to developed a Financial Health-Check tool to help small organisations spot financial risks early. We also started development of a strategic plan setting out how the company will widen its community benefit through financial resilience support, finance training for trustees and non-finance staff, and supported work placements. The surplus of £24,888 for the period has been retained. It will fund continued reduced-rate and free support for community organisations and the development of these programmes.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our stakeholders are our clients, particularly the charities and community organisations we support; their trustees, staff and volunteers; our employees and interns; and the wider voluntary and community sector. We consulted stakeholders in two main ways during the period: - Client survey (April 2026). All 19 respondents said they would recommend Oakleigh. The benefits they reported most were reduced stress, time saved and confidence that their filings were correct. They asked us to improve response times, send earlier deadline reminders, and offer annual reviews. - Sector survey (July–August 2026). We surveyed small CICs and not-for-profit organisations about their finance challenges. Most said finance takes up too much staff or volunteer time, and half described the stress of their financial and legal duties as high. Many said their current accountant's advice was reactive rather than proactive. The support they wanted most was help with budgeting, compliance, planning and having "someone to ask". We also gathered feedback continuously through day-to-day client contact and from our staff and intern. In response, we began changing how we communicate with clients. We introduced WhatsApp as a quicker way for clients to reach us and set a response-time standard for emails. The sector survey directly shaped the Financial Health-Check tool and our plans for trustee finance training, both of which focus on proactive, practical support. Next year we plan to repeat both surveys with the same questions, so we can measure whether these changes have made a difference.
