ForMed Films CIC specialise in co-creative storytelling for healthcare and social good. We engage with the lived experience of patients and healthcare professionals, and use this personal perspective for impactful engagement through digital media, including animation, audio and illustration. We bring people's experiences, emotions and words of advice into focus, to help demystify complex and taboo subjects with sensitivity and compassion. We create work that is beautiful, thoughtful and clear, helping people to empathise and relate to one another, make informed choices, and take action for positive health and wellbeing. Our aim is to engage with lived experience and creative excellence to empower better health and social outcomes. During the year February 2025 to January 2026 the CIC benefited the community in the following ways. FLAGSHIP FILMS The Clever Plan. Your Guide to Radiation at Mayo Clinic A co-created animation, guiding children and families through the process of pediatric radiation therapy at Mayo Clinic, USA. Accompanied by a suite of interactive audio introductions to members of the staff team, entitled Meet the Clever People. Purpose: Preparing to undergo radiation treatment can be a daunting prospect, especially for children and their extended families. This film offers an insight into the processes of radiation therapy through an animated tour of each stage. Partners: Produced for Mayo Clinic. The project involved travel to Mayo Clinic in the USA, and collaboration with teams in Phoenix, Rochester and Jacksonville. Outcome: Featuring the real voices of children who have experienced treatment and the healthcare professionals who support them, the film goes beyond explanation to offer a more realistic representation of the processes. Authentic sights, sounds and voices give clear and specific insights into what to expect, in a film that is simple and informative, comforting and optimistic. Completed October 2025. Becoming a Dad A co-created animation exploring the experiences of new parents from the father's perspective. Purpose: Becoming a dad is a major life change. Sometimes dads can feel overlooked at this time. They may find it harder to discuss how the change is affecting them or to access available support, which can impact on their mental and physical wellbeing, and that of their family. Partners: Developed in collaboration with Blackburn with Darwen Family Hub, with input from Dad Matters and service users, and supported by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council. Co-production lead at BwD Family Hub was Lara McNally. Outcome: This film gives voice to the diverse experiences of five real life dads, including trauma and challenges, strength and resilience. The film aims to promote conversation, encouraging dads to open up about their experiences and to seek help if they need it. Launch: The film was launched at the Blackburn with Darwen Dads Conference at the Livesey Family Hub on 18 June 2025. The film was presented alongside speakers from DadPad, Blackburn Rovers Dads FC, Dad Matters, Family Hub Network, dads' mental health service, and a keynote speech from Dr Anna Machin. Healthcare teams were encouraged to share the film with their colleagues and service users, to support dads-to-be and new parents, and to improve access to support services. Feedback: Knowing the impact this film will have on men and dads is amazing. I am very proud to have been a part of this whole animation. Participant. I'm two months away from becoming a father and this was a great learning opportunity. Audience at Family Hubs Conference. RESEARCH DISSEMINATION FILMS Birth Choices An explainer animation to share research findings on birth choices, vaginal birth or planned caesarean. Purpose: To inform expectant mothers and partners about the differences between Caesarean sections and vaginal birth. The film provides clear, accessible information on the short- and long-term pros and cons of each option, including effects on both mother and baby. The goal is to empower new mums and families so they can feel informed and supported in their choices without being overwhelmed. Partners: Clinical Collaborator Dr Mehreen Zaigham is a researcher at Lund University in Sweden. She has conducted significant studies on global and regional disparities in caesarean section rates, particularly focusing on the overuse of CS in private healthcare settings and the need for standardized classification systems. This film is made in collaboration using the findings from The Cesarean Study, funded by Skane University. Outcome: Work began on this film in autumn 2025, and continued into 2026. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CEO and film director Emma Lazenby was awarded a Developing Your Creative Practice grant from Arts Council England. The award project, entitled New Spaces of Animation, enabled Emma and producer Rebecca Goldsmith to explore new means of engagement with animation through immersive and interactive technologies. The team visited exhibitions, took part in conferences, events and learning activities that extended their skillset into new terrain. Whilst no public engagement was required for this fund, the project did result in prototyping of immersive animation, and a foundation for future public-facing work. This activity has added an additional strand of future potential practice for the team and for ForMed Films. IMPACT AND PROFILE RAISING ForMed's film A Weight won a Charity Film Award for Mental Health at the Big Syn International Film Festival. Becoming a Dad was nominated for a Smiley Charity Film Award. Both films explore dads' mental health and the importance of accessing support. They were also finalists at the Daddying Film Festival and Forum.
