COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

FRIENDS OF LYNCOMBE HILL FIELDS CIC

Company Number: 12616246 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 May 2026

Company activities and impact

The company was awarded a Licence to manage and improve the 10.5 acres of former grazing land known as Lyncombe Hill Fields by Bath & North East Somerset Council (B&NES) on 1st September 2020. The company’s Mission is to conserve and enhance the biodiversity of the land and maintain its wild nature whilst safeguarding public access. The site is open to the public at all times. We have an active pool of more than 40 adult volunteers, who undertake working sessions in the Fields on Wednesdays and Sundays each week, supervised by our team of six Site Leaders. Our volunteers also include primary school children, Duke of Edinburgh Award pupils, and Bath University students. The total of volunteer hours completed since September 2020 was more than 10,000 to the end of May 2026. We have raised and invested more than £27,000 from community, individual and other sources to support this work since 2020. The company’s activities in the year to 31st May 2026 have benefitted the community in the following principal ways: - Refining our mowing regime for the grassland to encourage wildflower growth. - Laying a further 6 tonnes of recycled stone to improve the condition of the footpaths. - Creating and managing our community tree nursery, containing around 1,000 baby saplings grown from seed, in partnership with More Trees BANES in support of B&NES Climate Emergency objectives. - Tending our three ‘Tiny Forests’ and planting saplings in the fields and hedgerows. - Creating eight small shallow ponds as ‘watering holes’ for mammals and birds. - Providing information about the site and our activities by means of our website, social media, and videos on our YouTube channel. - Publishing our ‘Nature Volunteers’ Companion’ with the aim of transferring the many lessons that we have learned since 2020, to other similar volunteer groups and projects. We have worked closely with B&NES Council in the last year, seeking to achieve our joint objective for the site to be designated as a Local Nature Reserve, still under our management, so providing additional protection against future development, and signposting the site as a place for education, well-being and enjoyment for all.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s principal stakeholders are representatives of the five Community and Residents’ Associations who are the company’s Subscribing Members. These bodies provided the initial funding to the company and annual funding has continued (albeit at a declining level as originally planned). They all have a wide and active membership in the areas surrounding the Fields. Regular communication has been achieved with these organisations, and with their committees and with their members, through a two-monthly Bulletin which has a mailing list of more than 180 addresses. Formal communication with the Subscribing Members takes place at our AGM, the sixth of which took place in July 2026. Other stakeholders include B&NES Council (through the Estates Surveyor as our formal client, the B&NES Sustainable Places and Regeneration Team, and through our two Ward Councillors), and with other local bodies who share our objectives such as Bath in Bloom. We produce a Directors’ Annual Report and Accounts for each AGM, containing also our Annual Management Plan, and this is then submitted to B&NES Council. This Plan draws on the various consultations and discussions. We have a strong track record of completing the proposals included in each Annual Management Plan. This latest Annual Report was approved by B&NES Council in September 2026.
