Scilly Coastal Clean-up CIC collects and removes marine debris from the beaches and coastline of the Isles of Scilly, throughout the year. During this financial year, and our first year of being established, SC Clean-up has collected in, sorted and counted community “beach clean piles”, supported individual beach cleaners and carried out our own beach and coastal cleans. SC Clean-up has additionally delivered three school sessions, to children from both Scilly schools and a visiting school from Cornwall. Over the course of the year SC Clean-up has collected, removed and sorted a total of 28,769 pieces of marine debris from nine Islands across Scilly, two inhabited and seven uninhabited, weighing in at approximately one tonne; in preparation for appropriate disposal, including redistributing, repurposing and recycling where possible. These activities have benefited the community in the following ways: 1. Three school beach cleans and activity sessions were facilitated, working with 69 primary aged children and 12 adults, from Five Islands Academy and Blackwater School; 2. The results of community action (individual beach cleans and beach clean piles) have been removed from the coastline across two inhabited Islands and seven uninhabited Islands. Making them safer for wildlife and people; 3. 28,769 pieces of marine debris, weighing approximately one tonne were collected, removed and sorted; 4. 170kgs of non-recyclable and hazardous marine debris was disposed of through the Council of the Isles of Scilly Waste Site; 5. 190kgs of rope and net was also disposed of and recycled; 6. Building an online community via our Facebook Page, sharing progress and educational posts about our Islands’ coastline and beaches with 389 people.
