Rentals applicable to operating leases where substantially all of the benefits and risks of ownership remain with the lessor are charged against profit on a straight line basis over the lease term.
Assets held under finance leases and hire purchase contracts are capitalised and depreciated over their useful lives. The corresponding lease or hire purchase obligation is treated in the balance sheet as a liability. As a result of the Legal Aid Agency payment system being inoperative from May 2025, no billable income was possible from that date to the end of January 2026. All claims were held over until the system became operational again, hence the substantial increase in Work-in-Progress.

Following the breakdown of the Legal Aid payment system in May 2025, The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) set up a contingency payment scheme to cover cash flow shortages within the legal community. As a result, we received £159453 including VAT up to 31st January 2026 of which £85795 related to unbilled profit costs and £35018 to disbursements, the balance of £38640 related to the VAT element. The profit costs were unbilled through the LAA system and are fully recoverable by LAA once the system commences again. We feel that their treatment as a creditor is the most appropriate way to record those transactions.
