REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JANUARY 2026
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 January 2026. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
(1) To promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of music in all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts and recitals and by such other ways as the company through its board of directors shall determine from time to time.
(2) To provide benefit to Cowes and Isle of Wight organisations with charitable status, clubs and organisations individuals and projects for specific purposes with charitable aims or benefit to Cowes and the Isle of Wight. This may include youth development, the sport of sailing for which Cowes is well known, services to the community, and local environmental sectors.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Island Concerts, the musical side of the charity and the company limited by guarantee - Island Concerns Limited, were offered a unique 1910 Broadwood baby grand piano belonging to the eminent musician Richard Studt. The director and trustees of the charitable trust decided to offer this piano to the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS), whose former flag officer Jamie Sheldon was involved with music at The Castle at the time. He visited Ealing where the piano was lying and, after playing it, with no hesitation decided that the RYS should have this historic piano. Island Concerns Ltd arranged and paid for the piano and its delivery from Ealing to Cowes. This was in addition to the Bluthner piano that was bought and delivered to Holy Trinity Church the previous year. So, most unusually, our charity has now bought two historic pianos for Cowes.
In addition to these two piano donations a recital was organised by Island Concerts on Saturday 3rd May 2025, featuring the pianist Eva Maria Doroszkowska, the granddaughter of Captain Franki, captain of the Polish naval ship ORP Blyskawica that was built in Cowes in 1936, which, having returned to Cowes for servicing, defended Cowes and East Cowes from the only air raid on Cowes that took place in WW2 on the 4th May 1942.
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust, and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.
