A BETTER HOOD CIC is a Black-led, Margate-based non-profit community organisation providing detached street football youth work to enrich and change the lives of disadvantaged and marginalised young people across Thanet. We deliver free doorstep youth sessions in the most deprived areas (“hoods”) of Thanet, engaging young people aged 12–25, with approx. 70% from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds, including refugees. Many of our young people access no other youth services and experience multiple and complex needs including poverty, unemployment, low skills and vulnerability to exploitation. Our work gives young people purpose, breaks down barriers, tackles racial inequalities and anti-social behaviour and empowers young people to be the best version of themselves and achieve brighter futures. In the 2025/26 financial year, we sustained our grant funding, enabling us to deliver up to six weekly evening sessions across Margate, Cliftonville, Millmead and Ramsgate, including 5v5 and 3v3 formats and a weekly skills club, engaging more than 350 local young people per year and 100 per week. Our grant income also enabled us to cover the costs of one employee, four sessional youth workers, two office staff as well as other core running costs. Beyond our sessions, we also continued to mentor young people and give them a voice in their community and advocate for better spaces. Through this work, we helped achieve the complete refurbishment of a neglected football court in Millmead in spring/summer 2026, giving young people the opportunity to shape the redesign and helping create one of the best and most modern football courts in Thanet. We have also strengthened our board which now has a majority of directors from Black backgrounds and includes members with direct live experience of the communities and young people we support. One of our newest directors, Adgilson Santos, first came to one of our street football sessions when he was just nine years old. After growing up with the project for over 10 years, he is now helping to shape its future as a board member. Our directors have also decided to change our legal name from YO! STREET ZONE CIC to A BETTER HOOD CIC to better reflect our vision, mission and the direction we are heading. Through our work, we strive to create a better hood, better chances in life and better futures for young people.
