Our main activity was delivering Brecon Choir Festival in July which is a mix of ticketed and free events. 2026 was the fifth year of this festival and was a great success, the festival is growing year on year with 19+ choirs featured across multiple events. As part of the festival in the year 2025/6 we were able to offer KS1 children in all our catchment schools the opportunity to sing in a Big Sing at the theatre on the Wednesday of the festival week. This followed a series of workshops in each school during the summer term leading up to the festival. 18 local school children in years 5 & 6 from ysgol y Bannau, Llanfaes and Cradoc Schools had singing sessions to prepare them for singing in Carmina Burana at our Grand Concert. The children joined conductor Adrian Partington and The BBC National Chorus of Wales on the Saturday night of the 2025 Brecon Choir Festival. Art workshops were run in ysgol y Bananu and ysgol Penmaes during the summer term following the theme of the 2025 Choir Festival and their work was exhibited in the gallery of Theatr Brycheiniog over the summer. A platform was given to our local community choirs on Festival Saturday with a concert in The Guildhall and as part of the free Choir Trail in the afternoon. The Choir Trail is a free event throughout the town allowing accessibility for all. We run a Young Singer Award each year supporting the ambitions of aspiring young singers and give a platform to the winner to sing at our Grand Concert over the festival. In addition to the festival we manage the welcome banners for the town and facilitate our local festivals having a profile on the lampposts at the key entrances to Brecon at cost neutral.
As part of our planning for our main activity, the Brecon Choir Festival we talk with our local choirs, the venues that host us and organisations that deliver the work that we do with children to plan the community side of the our programme and ensure as much of our community is involved as possible. We collaborate with other local festivals to organise the lamppost banners.
