The company runs Brighton Rope, an LGBTQ+, disabled and neurodivergent led group that helps people learn Japanese inspired performance art. The CIC was formed in Feb 2024 and in the last year we have benefitted the community in the following ways: - We have delivered 15+ classes and 100+ hours of tuition. This has enabled 200+ local people to explore the art of Japanese Performance in an inclusive and accessible space. - We have hosted a Performance evening, showcasing the work of local, disabled and queer artists and also provided part-time employment for 6 local residents. - We have also supported several local LGBTQ+ venues by hosting our events in these spaces. This funding helps to keep important community spaces open and improves employment outcomes for marginalised groups running these venues.
The company’s stakeholders are local residents of and visitors to Brighton. We ask everyone attending a class with us to share (if they feel comfortable) how we can meet their accessibility needs. We believe everyone can explore Japanese performance art and everything we teach can be adapted to meet their physical and emotional requirements. As a result of consulting stakeholders, we invested in supportive chairs, to help those with mobility issues feel more comfortable in our classes. We also invite feedback after every class about how we can improve what we do and invite the community to contribute to our Brighton Rope Discord server, where users can interact and share their experiences should they wish. This helps us keep accountable and able to better meet the needs of our community
