Directors' report period ended 31 July 2026

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 July 2026

Principal activities of the company

The principal activities of the company during the year were to provide Makaton workshops for parents, carers, professionals and organisations to increase confidence in using Makaton and to improve communication opportunities for people with learning disabilities, autism, Down Syndrome, speech, language and communication needs, and others who benefit from visual communication. Alongside our training, we developed and delivered a range of inclusive online community groups for adults with learning disabilities. These included Makaton Club, Book Buddies, Kitchen Disco and other themed social sessions, providing regular opportunities for communication, friendship, learning and participation in a safe and accessible environment. These sessions were designed to reduce social isolation, build confidence and encourage active communication through signing, symbols, music, stories and shared interests. Our services were made available to individuals, families, community groups and organisations, both locally and online, enabling us to reach people who may otherwise have limited access to inclusive communication support. We also created and shared free to download communication resources to support individuals, families, educators and support staff. These resources encouraged the use of Makaton and other inclusive communication strategies in everyday life, helping to remove barriers to participation. As a new Community Interest Company, we focused on establishing sustainable services that would provide lasting community benefit. Our activities have increased awareness of accessible communication, supported individuals and organisations to communicate more inclusively, and created welcoming opportunities for people who may otherwise experience barriers to communication, social interaction and learning.

Company activities and impact

This was the first financial year of Better Communication Together CIC. During the year, we established the organisation and began delivering activities that promote inclusive communication and reduce barriers for people who benefit from accessible communication. We provided Makaton workshops for parents, carers, professionals and organisations to increase confidence in using Makaton and to improve communication opportunities for people with learning disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, speech, language and communication needs, and others who benefit from visual communication.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company's stakeholders include people who use our services, their families and carers, professionals, organisations who commission training, and volunteers who support our activities. As this was our first year of operation, consultation has mainly taken place through informal discussions, participant feedback during and after sessions, email correspondence, evaluation forms and ongoing conversations with those accessing our services. Feedback has been used to shape the development of our activities, including the themes and content of community groups, the creation of accessible communication resources, and the planning of future services. We have also responded to suggestions by introducing new activities and adapting our delivery to better meet the needs of participants, helping to ensure our services remain inclusive, accessible and responsive to the communities we support.

Directors' remuneration

The total amount paid to directors in respect of qualifying services was £6,840.
