The Tax Academy (‘TTA’) continues to work with prisoners helping them bring their tax affairs up to date prior release. The Tax Academy won both the Welsh (Oct 2025) and UK Award (Dec 2025) for the social enterprise Building Diversity, inclusion, Equity and Justice award and visited in April 2026 the House of Lords to receive the Award. The TTA is now part of the Prison Working Group working alongside Ministry of Justice, HMPPS, HMRC and DWP trying to find a joint solution to the problems prisoners face dealing with their tax affairs. During the year, a Tax Masterclass was designed and piloted at HMP Stafford and HMP Preston and tax clinics were undertaken at a number of prisons. TTA is able to promote HMRC tax initiatives and provide information to taxpayers though such medium as the prison newspaper Inside time, Prison radio, podcasts and tax clinics.
The main stakeholders are HMRC. We have quarterly meetings through the HMRC Individuals Stakeholder Forum where we represent prisoners. We also work with the HMRC Voluntary Sector Tax Resolution Service. The Tax Academy also contributes on a number of HMRC initiatives including Making Tax Digital (‘MTD’). During the year TTA was invited to join the Prison Working Group, working with the main Stakeholders in prison and HMRC.
